I have no idea why they had him punt on that play.

 I know they used to do pooch kicks with him on 3rd and long trying to catch a team with no one back, but that was 4th and forever from the 1 (or 2) lol.  Maybe the punter was hurt. 

Now that I look it up, he was an All-American Selection at punter for UNLV in 1983 and 1984.  LOL.  Still an odd spot to let your QB punt, assuming your regular punter was available.

The answers in this thread are ridiculous. It's a very fair question. As one poster stated, you can kickoff but can't use a tee in the NFL. You can use a tee in college or high school. The reason why they always punt is because of hang time with the punt. It helps coverage because it won't be a touch back with the kickoff and its easier to cover the punt. Love the many here saying you HAVE to punt.  I did coach special teams for a D3 college for 14 years.
