Jimmy G and Baker M must feel like yesterday's meatloaf???

Rumors are, that now that Trey Lance is about to be the starter that SF management will be asking Jimmy G to take a pay cut from his 25 million dollar contract and be offered somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million to be the backup. For a backup that is top dollar but of course that is not how G views himself. 

If he passes his physical it would be managements hope for other teams to be making offerings for his services but so far no other team seems interested. Of course with a few injuries, that could change. 

The real clusterfutch is in Cleveland... the uncertainty of how the NFL is going to handle the 'Watson' affair is still up in the air...why the Browns would sign him to a 5 year 230 million dollar guaranteed contract is mind blowing with so much at stake and no inkling on how the league is going to proceed in reaction to his legal issues. 

Apparently 20 of the 22 women who filed complaints would have settled out of court but Watson refused. If Watson is told that he can't play in 2022 by the league they have Jacoby Brisset and of course Baker. 

Baker is signed to a 5th year 18 million dollar contract but after how they did him dirty and how he views them now, he no longer wants to play for them. I can't blame him but what will he do if they call on him to start when Watson is banned for a year or however much fat Goodell sees fit? 

Only Cleveland could get into this kind of nightmare which is why they are the Cleveland Browns. I was pulling for them but I can't anymore...

I really think San Francisco is about to make a huge mistake doing this.  I think they have already, more or less, done the same thing with Jimmy G that Cleveland has done with Mayfield.  It is never a good plan to make your QB think you do not have confidence in him.  Now if you are one of those QBs, it is going to be hard to play if you know every single time you make the slightest mistake you might be yanked or that the talk of replacing you will start up again. 

San Francisco has a good team and I do not think Lance has near the intangibles that Jimmy G seems to have or grasp of the offense or what it takes to play QB in the NFL, yet.  Jimmy G just keeps on winning. 

Mayfield has struggled -- but Cleveland is not a good team.  For sure, Watson would be an upgrade there.  But is that really the way you handle that situation?  They should have had an absolute guarantee that all of this stuff was behind Watson and he was not going to be suspended.  They went out and signed him to a guaranteed huge deal -- not even knowing if he would play this year.

The only thing that might be said is that if either of these guys gets the chance to play -- maybe they can play well enough for another team to sign them.

I just do not like the way either GM or organization handled the situations at all.

Weird feeling the NFL gives Watson special treatment and waits until 2023 for his trial to hand our a suspension .....Me personally I'd suspend him for 2 years.like MKB did to that pitcher ...

Baker should have sat last year after the injury ..The Browns were idiots giving Watson all that money...Find myself oddly rooting for baker to be good somewhere else ...

49ers are so close to being the top dog in the NFC ...If they dump Jimmy they have keys fhab a 2% chance of going to the Bowl .imo 

Mayfield should swallow his massive ego (fat chance of that) and realize that, since his market value is near zero, he needs to prove himself all over again on the field as Watson' backup if he ever wants another juicy contract.

Agree with you (and I'm a NYG guy lifetime, no rooting interest pro or con)...so Jimmy G is 33-14 career as a starter, and when he wasn't playing the Niners' record was really bad, like 8-28 or something.  The shoulder's the big ??? but even SF mgmt wanted to see if he could rehab without surgery, which didn't work.  So surgery back in March and around 16 weeks recovery is the word.

I read where the two years he was healthy he took them to the SUPE (2019) and then lost in the Conf. Ship (2021).  Guys wanna say he's "fragile"...that's always the knock on him lol whatever.  Do these sound like "fragile guy" type injuries?  2018 knee ACL grade 3-most severe, 2019 healthy the Supe year, 2020 high ankle sprain 2x, 2021 calf strain (wk 4 missed 1 game)/fractured thumb/UCL ligament tear (wk 16)/played throughout the playoffs with torn ligament in his hand and shoulder sprain in WC win over the Cowboys.  Okay, so he's not Bret Favre...but how many QBs were?

Niners are between a rock/hard place if you read the stories.  On the hook for $25MIL in Jimmy's last contract year 2022.  They can trade him, but other team would have to pick up the full $25M.  If they cut him they're on the hook for around $9MIL (which includes $7.5MIL injury guarantee), but the dead money of $16MIL still counts on their 2022 cap space.

To your point about how the Niners indicating a lack of confidence in Jimmy G...totally agree, not smart.  Niners want to keep him at a reduced/backup price of around $10MIL.  And they're putting all their eggs in Trey's basket it seems.  

If I was his agent (LMAO just thinking out loud), the Niners is the best place for him.  No way are they gonna pay him $25MIL to sit...and Deebo Samuel isn't about to wait around while Trey Lance learns the system (2 years minimum, if he can learn Shanny's system at all; not an easy one and the most motion at the snap of any NFL team).

So tell Lynch you'll take $10MIL to sit but with incentives for every game he starts, and other performance based ones.  If he doesn't meet them half-way most likely he'll walk with the $9MIL guaranteed money.  But then he has to decide on/haggle with some .500 team that probably won't win bye the time he hangs up his cleats.

I never understood why Trey Lance was worth giving up so much in moving up in order to draft him? Was he forced on Shanahan by management or was this Kyle's idea? I know the guy has some talent but there are zero guarantees making the transition from college to pros right? 

Shanahan is his own worst enemy...goes back to that Falcon meltdown in the Superbowl...he had victory in his grasp but then called pass plays instead of kicking the fg and going up by two scores? Then in SF going to the air when the run was so successful...it is either ego or he is over thinking...too cerebral at times IMO.

Seems to me that Mayfield has spent much of his QB time in Cleveland running for his life playing behind dysfunctional Olines. He took over an offense that was on life support and generated points out of thin air.

Then he played for a succession of lousy coaches like Freddie Kitchens and then last year was allowed to play while being injured. Why?????????

That was a clear sign to me that Stefanski and ownership wanted Mayfield to fail and to plant in the minds of the Browns' fandom that a change needed to be made at QB...it is called 'manufacturing consent'...

If I were Mayfield, I would show up and workout hard every day until I was injured and then collect the 18 million for the current season, as I see it, Baker owes them NOTHING...

That game had all the earmarks of a fix for sure...NFL ratings were down and they wanted to generate fan interest...a real soap opera filled with drama queens. Wish that American football had another legit pro league...I would happily $hit can the NFL.

I like the 49ers to win the division this year....the Rams are one injury away to Stafford, Kupp or Donald to being a below 500 team.  But definitely he choked that Super Bowl, I had the Falcons, and I had the Bills versus the Chiefs, and I had the Chiefs when the game winning interception versus the Pats was disallowed in the AFC conference finals due to a guy lining up offside.....lol.

One would think that the Browns maybe had someone at league office to give them an idea of if and/or when a suspension would take place for Watson, and if so, for how long, before signing him to a 250 million dollar guaranteed contract.

I'm telling ya....is this how life on this earth is supposed to work?  You've got guys operating in the underbelly of society who get offered and then paid a guaranteed quarter of a billion?   That haven't even produced yet for the organization?  That might not even play for a year or two, like the guy on the Dodgers?....and the law abiding good citizens of the world  wouldn't see that in 100 lifetimes....smh.

 The thought was he was another mobility QB who could throw outside the pocket, which works really well with the zone run because it allows you to go crazy with bootlegs and PA and even Wildcat. However, his throwing accuracy in actual games was hurried, errant, and shaky.

If he improves on that he will be solid, but so far all I’ve seen is throwing accuracy of a C-/C+ backup QB. To everyone’s point, Jimmy G excels in many more areas. Lance was always a risky project pick in lieu of his limited college resume, so maybe Year 2 of the project will show significant development under Shanahan, who is supposed to be a QB whisperer.

Shanahan has lost almost all his coordinators since the SB run. 

Someone asked why Jimmy G gets the injury prone label - it’s because two of those knee/leg injuries happened while just running by himself, nobody actually hit him on those plays.  However, that can still happen to anyone, but that’s where the label comes from. 

Personally I would have stuck with Jimmy, but SF is invested in their project QB.

As for Baker, I would show up every day, smile, and make things as awkward as possible in that QB room. Give them zero reason to cut him essentially, which also shows that he is a “team player” during trade season.

Honestly both teams are banking on other teams to have QB1 injuries, which do tend to happen. They’re also waiting for a phone call from Seattle, but apparently Schneider wanted to draft Drew Luck years ago and wants to give him a shot. Luck looked terrible at Denver, I suspect he will flame out by Week 6. 

One more thought … if you are the remaining teams in the league, why in the world would you trade for Baker and make him a QB1? He’s still injured and recovering from surgery, he wants a big deal, and his resume isn’t exactly terrific with one of the most talented offensive rosters in the AFC. (Top tier RB, WRs, TE, and OL.)

Hey bud...totally agree with you.  Kinda interesting...Trey won both the Walter Payton Award and the Jerry Rice Award as a freshman on D1-FCS (MVConf-2nd tier); most outstanding offensive player, and most outstanding freshman in 2019.  He was in school in 2018 but was red-shirted (played in 2 games), and in 2019 he took the ND State Bison to the FCS Championship and a 28-20 win over the James Madison Dukes.  His 2020 sophomore season was shut down because of covid (played 1 game in October), and he opted out in 2021 to get ready for the NFL draft.  I'm sure you (and most guys here) know the story; just wanted to refresh.  So he played a total of 2+16+1 games in college at a FCS school.  No doubt he was and is very talented, but the question was always..."what about the competition?"

Obviously everything clicked for Lynch and Kyle Shanny...they did the circuit to see Mac Jones, then Justin Fields, then Trey.  They visited with Trey's parents at the pro day and watched and saw Trey had the arm and the speed.  Trey's dad was in training camp in 1994 with the 49ers (Mike Shanahan was the HC) before playing in the CFL with Saskatchawan.  Kyle remembered Carleton Lance because Kyle was a ball boy for his dad at the time.  And with the 3rd pick in the 2021 NFL draft...the SF 49ers select...

4 yrs/$34MIL all guaranteed (including a $22MIL signing bonus).  Heckuva small sample size...really only his sophisticated season/16 games including taking the team to the FCS championship.  I guess they knew what they were doing?  I mean, they obviously wanted Trey (and by all accounts he's a great person).

But if Jimmy G walks then Shanny's gonna be feeling the pressure to ratchet back some of the offensive schemes.  And Deebo is already not happy with his situation (though he says he'll be in training camp in mid-July).  Jimmy G, Trey Lance, and Nate Sudfeld...that's it right now.  For a team that's been so close to grabbing the golden ring...

Lancer, I agree with you that Kyle Shanny is a a little too confident in his abilities, and I think John Lynch (a lot less confident imo) will definitely have some pucker-factor when camp rolls around.

Interesting, too...#11 pick Justin Fields signed 4 yrs/$18MIL all guaranteed/$11MIL signing bonus.  Mac Jones picked at #15 signed 4 yrs/$15.5MIL all guaranteed/$8.6MIL signing bonus.

Who is in the QB room in Cleveland? The Watson thing is such a huge cloud over the team and hard for us to get a read on the team without knowing what the league decision on Watson will end up being

Jimmy G is trash. He has not been the same QB since injuring his knee. I have posted about this numerous times since his return, including extensively during their Super Bowl year. My theory is being that the injury was to his plant leg, he is timid and afraid to plant that thing hard and drive off of it, which is how you generate power in a throw. His lack of drive leads to his passes lacking pop, often floating, often fluttering like wounded ducks.

Baby Shan's offense isn't complicated. Often you only have one read and a check down but if that read is open, you better zing it in there. Jimmy G has no zing. With that said, I haven't seen anything from Trey Lance to Garner confidence. I think the overreached on him but at the same time, they had to move on from Jimmy.
