It appears to me something is clearly wrong with him health wise. Late regular season they pickup C.J. Anderson and Gurley sees absolutely no action the last 2 weeks of the season against 49ers & Cardinals. Then he interestingly reappears and actually has a very nice performance against the Cowboys in their first playoff game. Then he disappears again during the Saints game after having little action.
He never complained about being benched that game. Now why wouldn't you complain about being benched in a freaking championship game in New Orleans as the superstar of your team unless you're dealing with a serious body problem? Why did they go and grab C.J. Anderson to begin with? Because they must've known Gurley is dealing with some issue and they needed another guy who could take over the workload when necessary. C.J. Anderson is the kind of guy who can be your feature RB.
The question is how much will the 2 weeks of rest help him? This seems to be a long term issue seeing as it still wasn't healed in time for the Saints game.
We have McVay saying Gurley is 100% for the Superbowl and will have a very big role in this game, but is he just BS'ing to force the Patriots to use too much focus on preparing for him? If I were the coach I'd say my superstar RB is 100% and ready to rock even if he had a serious issue in reality.
My prediction is that he will show up in some key moments (or maybe just one very important critical moment) but will not be consistently great throughout the game. We will see more C.J. Anderson and we'll be waiting for Gurley to show up later in the game. The commentators will be wondering about Gurley and if he will raise his game and start having a bigger role after a so-so or poor 1st half. I suspect he'll have an important TD sometime in the 2nd half. Maybe it helps their winning chances, maybe it's too little too late, I don't know. I just don't think we will see a steadily top notch Gurley sustained through the game.
