Report: Bears Chairman told players Nagy won't be fired after the Lions game
Chicago Bears chairman George McCaskey told his players Wednesday that coach Matt Nagy won't be fired after Thursday's game against the Detroit Lions, sources told ESPN's Jeff Dickerson.
The news comes a day after Nagy denied a report that Thursday's contest would be his final game with the franchise, calling it "not accurate."
Additionally, just hours prior to the report of Nagy's impending departure, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz claimed an "overwhelming" number of players want the 43-year-old coach gone.
But despite coming under fire during a short week, Nagy said Tuesday he remains focused on the task at hand.
"My focus is on these players and Detroit, and that's it," he said, per Dickerson. "That's my job as a head coach and a leader, is to do that. These players have been amazing. They've been great."
Nagy added: "The only thing we can do is focus on the now and do everything we can. Thursday is going to be here quickly."
Nagy has struggled to recapture the heights of his debut 2018 campaign, where he was named Coach of the Year after Chicago won the NFC North with a 12-4 record. Since that season, the Bears have recorded back-to-back eight-win campaigns and are currently 3-7 entering Week 12.
Chicago will aim to end its five-game losing skid against the winless Lions on Thanksgiving.
