Top based on who I want running my offense is:

1) Manning---this guy is the system, the way he reads, reacts, and makes defenses look silly is stunning

2) Brady---I like Brady but I think he is a product of a very sound system in NE, he does make the throws and he has rings

3) Palmer---Carson is kinda flying low b/c he plays with the Bungals, but the way he commands his offense and his ability puts him at #3

4) Big Ben--The guy plays hard and I think he is still learning...other than 06 he has been solid

5) Drew Brees---This guy is good and he is tough, don't know why the Chargers gave up on him so quick

Honorable Mention: Hasselbeck (model of consistency), Romo (helter-skelter who always gives a chance to win)

You have no parameters, so there's no way to answer. Top 5 fantasy QB's, or top 5 QB's that give you the best chance to win a Super Bowl in '09 ? Top 5 for entertainment purposes?

I'll solve this McCrap argument right now. EVERY time McNabb goes down, his backup has either matched him or outperformed him. Just ask the Philly fans how bad they wanted to keep Jeff Garcia after the time he served in Philly.

Matt Hasselback is a proven game winner, that noone gives much airtime to. Also, Big Ben isn't proven. He won a suberbowl with a team that won games because of DEFENSE first, and RUNNING second. All they needed out of Ben was game management, see Dilfer, or Eli . Disruptive defenses, good running games, and a Quarterback that didn't lose games for you.

do us a favor and check big bens #s during the superbowl run.
he was as much a part of the indy win and the denver win as anyone. in fact he nailed the afc title game without a doubt.
if we do not draft him in 04 the colts would of been the 2005 champs period. he absolutley is in the top 5 under any paramaters.

go see the stats for yourself before bashing a great QB.

I'm no Eagles fan bro, i'm able to look at both the 'Boys and Eagles objectively. There is nothing to discuss here with Eagles stupid homer fans, you guys are so friggin clueless bunch of jerks that don't know the first thing about sports. Ask any Philly fan who's the best athlete to ever come out of Philly, and they'll tell you it's Rocky. The thing is, i don't think they realize that he was a character in a movie, and not an actual 'sports figure'.

McNabb is a top 5 QB.

only if your list of top 5 is Top 5 QB's to choke everytime it matters most. The defense made the Eagles team of the first half of this decade so dominate. McNabb is/was average at best

The top five QB's in this discussion are the best five QB's in the league. Dont make it complicated. Fantasy is another whole new discussion. This is a football forum. Not a FANTASY football forum. So the question basically is: Who are the top five QB's that are the best at doing what they do? Plain and simple.

Now I have to say a few words to defend my man, Big Ben. It's true, he didn't play well in the Super Bowl. But in the playoff games leading up to the Super Bowl he played like a champ. And the team couldn't have made it there without him. In the four postseason games he played that year he had a combined rating of over 100 despite his 22 rating in the Super Bowl. He also averaged 23.25 pass attempts in those games. To say that he merely managed games that year is flatout wrong. He played 12 games that year and averaged 22.3 attempts per game. You compare him to Dilfer but in 2000 Dilfer had a QB rating of 76.6 and threw for 1502 yards. Ben in his Super Bowl year had a rating of 98.6 and threw for 2385 yards. Dont compare Dilfer to Ben. There's no comparison there. Dilfer has a career QB rating of 70.2. Ben is now fifth amoung all time QB's with a career rating of 92.5. And he's played for four years. How is that unproven?

He also is tied with Peyton Manning since 2004 (when he came into the league) for the most fourth quarter comeback wins amoung active QB's. Him and Manning are also the only two quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to record a perfect passer rating in 3 different games. He also has the longest regular season win streak ever to start a career (15 games). No QB has ever done that. He's had one bad year. That was '06 when he nearly died in the offseason, then had an appendectomy just days before game one, and then suffered a concussion in week 7. His subpar numbers are understandable. Take that year away, and his career QB rating is 100.76! I could go on and on but I believe I've proven my point. How many years does it take to be proven? More than four? I dont think so.

And why do you have Pennington and Vince Young in your top five? If you can somehow justify that, I'll get on this thread and declare you the smartest man alive!

All i said was Big isn't proven, and all of a sudden i'm bashing. For anyone not familiar with Steelers and Eagles fans, let it be known they are a diff. breed. I have no problem with BenR., i actually have always been a big fan from his days at Miami, and thought he was a great pick when the Steelers drafted him. He was also at the helm in one of the best NFL games that i ever watched in person. Philly @ Pitt the year the birds had T.O., and both teams were like 11-0 or 10-1, and Philly went into Pitt and had their ass handed to them, was truly awesome game to be at, and the fans make the experience.

Steel, - i only asked for parameters because it's such a broad question that you end up with all this nonsense talk about McNabb, and people living in the past.

bluesplayer, - no need to check his stats, i know he has very good numbers. I saw alot of Steeler love in this thread and people were putting him as the #3 QB, so i just used him in comparison with Hasselback, who seemed to get no mentions.

as for the V Young and C Pennington comments, those are the answers you get with no guidelines for your questioning.

Here's my list, if i had the entire pool of NFL players at my disposal, and i was going to assemble a team from scratch, how I'D rank my QB choices:

My top 5 list:

1.) Tom Brady- Lot's of rings, lot's of smarts, plenty of arm. He knows and shows that he owes it to everyone else on his team because they have made him what he is today.

2.) Peyton Manning- I am a peyton hater. Always have been since his days at Tenn., where he got tagged with 'never being able to win a big game'. I don't like his attitude in general, and especially not towards his teammates, as i've never took him to be a big team player as a Colt. That being said, i believe he is the best QB in the ame when it comes to making plays, and everything else that he does on the field when it comes to getting his offense in the endzone. I put him behind Brady because i feel he's a bad team player, and Brady trumps him with rings.

3.) Brett Favre- One of my fav. players, even though he has played most his entire career as a divisional rival of my fav. team. I am unsettled as to the way he's going about this 'retirement' thing. Best arm in the game, has a great understanding of defenses and what it takes to win. The best team player of all the QB's. Hands down the most entertaining QB to watch, i love his emotion for the game. I've seen him make plenty of bad decisions, but i've seen him do way more positive things on the field. In his recent years, the INT's seemed to of become a problem, but if I'm starting a team from scratch, i believe he's you're 3rd best choice out there to give your team the best chance to win games. I would hang my hat on last years amazing performance and figure he still has something left in the tank.

4.) Vince Young.- I know everyone will flame this pick, but if you've followed Vince's career as a QB, you know that he is a winner. His statistics are nothing to write home about, BUT he finds ways to win and puts tremendous pressure on defenses with his size, arm, and mobility. Here's some stats that matter. Just win, right?

ncaafb record as a starter 30-2 If you never had the pleasure of watching him single handidly beat the USC team that everyone touted as the best ever, than you owe it to yourself to get a tape of that game and please watch. Most amazing performance i've ever seen in sports

NFL record as a starter :

rookie year 8-5, 6 straight wins, four 4th quarter comebacks

2nd year 10-6. first full year as a starter led his team to the playoffs in a very tough division in the toughest confernce.

His QB ratings are normally the bottom of the barrel, but he is young and expect them to improve. Look at the rest of the Titan's and you'll see he makes due with what he has. The fiercest of competitors, what he lacks in QB ratings he makes up for in rushing ability. he's not as speedy as Vick was, but he's probably harder to take down then any RB or WR in the league.

5.) Ben Roethlisberger- I think that there's a couple diff. QB's that would suffice here at 5, Brees, Hasselback, or Cutler, but gun to my head i'd go with Ben because he is another winner, and has the intangibles. He isn't fast, but he's also not afraid to take off and run when it's there, and he can stand under pressure and deliver a nice pass with a defense collapsing on him. Romo at 5 is a stretch, McNabb no friggin way.

Ah, the playoffs. Superman had his kryptonite. Tony Romo has the playoffs. Did you know that during the three years that he started for Eastern Illinois, his team made it to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs three times? It did, and on each of the three occasions, Eastern Illinois lost ... in the first round. Add the two first-round playoff defeats that he's had as Cowboys quarterback, and we sense either a horrible trend or some cosmic coincidence. The man has never won a playoff game in his life. Am I the only one that seems concerned about that? Granted, Romo threw for 4,211 yards and 36 touchdowns last season, both franchise records in a record book where Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Danny White and Don Meredith are mentioned prominently. -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram

A. you have no facts, stats or anything real to your arguments they are just your opinions (which is fine but be man enough to say that instead of bash other people who show facts and stats to refute your claims)

B. you have no self esteem or self worth

I say its just A for now but i reserve the right to change my opinion.

FYI- my high school has almost 5,000 kids...i was not good enough to play college football (i am only 5 foot 9 and NO team wants a 5 foot 9 QB). i actually enjoy calling plays and coaching better then playing so it worked out well ( my old o-coordinator in high school took me under his wings and i would stay after practice to go over sight adjustments and what routes worked the best against each defense we saw). I work for the biggest lost mitigation firm in the nation (Richman & Associates) so almost walmart but not quite!!!

Not only a college, but I don't know why a high school with 5,000 kids would want a 5'9 QB either. Im happy that you had a daddy figure at your high school to get your mind flowing. Moving on, I would like to hear some sound arguements comparing Marino to Romo please.

I know most people on covers enjoy arguing with facts, so here you are. And like I said, he's on my Top 5

Chad Pennington-

Chad Pennington (2000-present)

Can we give a little love to Herbie the Dentist? Jets fans have certainly never been sold on him. And a spate of injuries hasn’t helped Pennington’s career or his reputation in New York and around the league.

But he boasts the 7th best passer rating in NFL history (88.89) and the No. 5 mark among active players. Believe it or not, Pennington had a better career passer rating than Tom Brady heading into the 2007 season.

Pennington is also the most accurate passer in league history, with a record 65.61 career completion percentage. Hard to believe, considering he puts up so many parabolas that the networks want to hire him as a sideline sound man following his next rotator cuff injury in October.

And the lack of a laser, rocket arm is compounded by the quality of the offensive talent around him, which has never been spectacular.

But proof of Pennington’s proficiency is evidenced by the fortunes of the Jets when he plays and when he doesn’t: Pennington has played in 12 or more games just three times in a season since replacing Vinny Testaverde in 2002. The Jets have made the playoffs all three of those seasons (2002, 2004, 2006). They failed to win even half their games every other season (2003, 2005, 2007).

Head coach Eric Mangini was “Man-Genius” in his rookie season at the helm in 2006. Pennington, not so coincidentally, played every single game for the one and only time in his career that year. Mangini became a duplicitous rat turncoat in 2007 while his team struggled through a 4-12 sophomore campaign – and Pennington started just 8 games.

In other words the Jets are a playoff team when Pennington plays; they’re an also-ran when he doesn’t. He’s a difference-maker at quarterback and one of the most precise parabola-tossers the game has ever seen.

If not for the rash of injuries we might be talking about a player who competes with Brady and Peyton Manning for status as the best quarterback in the league today.
