The coin flip theory.
Have you ever hit that point of desperation (a la John Anthony in the movie
Two For the Money) where you make a wagering decision based on a coin flip? Where your own research, statistical
breakdowns, expert advice, etc., etc., all equated to a loss at the end of the
game? Many of us have latched on to the
hottest prognosticator on this or other websites to ride their coattails to
victory. However I’ve read that even a
great handicapper will only win about 55-60% of their total picks over the
course of a season. I predict a coin
flip can do better.
Pschaw you say?? Let’s
see how you do against the coin.
Here’s my experiment.
Just for the sake of science, I will flip the same coin for
every game of the season and post the results here before the Thursday night
game. I will post the lines I am picking
against and we will see how the coin flip does over the course of each week and
season. To keep things consistent, the
home team will always be heads as will the over (thus visitors will be tails as
will the under). Keep in mind, I will be choosing lines based
their postings Thursday….so if there are last minute changes to the lines prior
to game time, those will not be reflected.
Also, if a game is off the board pending an injury update, that will not
be accounted for either unless I feel like doing it Sunday morning (don’t count
on that).
Let’s see how it goes……

at work we had a office pool where you picked every game ATS and award caash to weekly and season winners. guy at work flipped a coin for every game all nfl season for 5 years straight years. he would always finish around 50%. it was interesting that he would routinely have weeks of 13-3 then 4-12. a true feast or famine scenario. he ended up winning $$$ from the top picks for some of the weeks, but never for season.
i predict you will find the similar results. you will finish 48-52 range, be better than some cappers be worse than some. on fire one week, ice cold the next. no chance at money needing the elusive 52.5%
curious to see results

Ok, here we go with Week 1. The lines were provided by Covers as of Thursday morning at 11:30 PDT. Hopefully the format is easy enough to understand. Personally, for TNF I'm picking GB +5.5 and the Over, so I'm interested to see how I do against the coin tonight.
Good luck to all!

You should flip the coin two times.....one for the team result and one for the over/under......because with one flip it will always be away team and under and home team and over......its not always home and over or away and under....just saying since its two diferent picks it should be two flips of the coin.

It's two flips. If you look at the picks there is a variety of outcomes that wouldn't align with just one flip.

So the coin starts off the year 2-0, picking SEA and the Over. Wish my own pick started out as strong. I'm 0-1 thus far. We'll see how the rest of the week goes.

So are you expecting us to track the coin's record? Is there any particular reason you didn't post the record, after creating this thread and getting people interested in the experiment?
