My one preseason note for all of you degens.... The kickoff is going to drastically change the game this year. Average starting field position should go from the 23 last year to the 30 this year, with higher standard deviation in there also. Good coaches will dominate this early in the year - and the morons will actually lose games because of it - there is a definite strategy that changes over the course of a game and if coaches just plug and play it they are going to be toast.
GL to all degens betting practice tonight.

Just checking to see if this mic is still on.
About a month from now it will all begin.

Not one response yet to a thread by the mighty Van. How times have changed. Great point on the kickoffs agreed. Do you think it will lead to more overs as well? Will it take books a period to adjust? Good seeing you on here as always

Teams actively starting to train back up LBs on how to kick. Kick off kickers to be replaced by fast, hard hitting defensive players.
Instead of needing 2-3 broken tackles to take one to the house, returners seem to only need to break 1. Kicker is now a very important defender when the ball is in play.

Unless there is evidence of an inordinate amount of injuries during kickoffs ( they may be ) there was no need for it imo, and should have left well enough alone. Good thing for Devin Hester he was born when he was.

Hang time is not a factor anymore, it's all about landing the ball in the "landing zone". I haven't dug into the rules to see if any number is allowed to kick, but if there's no rules on what numbers are allowed to kick, let a quick and powerful player kick off and be the safety. Watching the kick off, the line seems to be pretty thin since everyone is spread out. That kicker spot might be a crucial last line of defense. I'm sure there are some defensive backs that can manage landing the kick off in the zone. Would much rather have speed and power as the last man than a kicker that may be looking to avoid contact.

Any player is allowed to kick. You will see non-kickers kicking off on week 1. There is a rule that the kicker (who kicks from the -35 if there is not a penalty) cannot cross the 50 until the ball is touched, but if a receiver breaks through the 10 men who didnt kick the ball it would be very beneficial to have a guy kicking who can has speed and can make a tackle. It is not that hard to kick a teed ball consistently between the goal line and the 10 yard line for anyone with enough practice.
I do think the best kickoffs with be line drive type of kicks, that can land in the landing zone and potentially get in the end zone. The one caveat is that the blockers for the receiving team between the 30 and 35 yard line CAN BLOCK THE KICK if it is low enough to do so. If they do, and the ball lands outside of the landing zone, it is taken to the 40 yard line.

Hey there Van. Yes, it's almost about that time. So, with an average of having the ball ?? at the 30 yard line.will we see more coaches going for it on 4th from the 20, 15, 10 and 5 yard line? Wouldn't it be a better factor then the kick off? Any thoughts
If you fail to Manage. You are managing to fail.

I don't have any thoughts; I'm not sharp enough - but the smarter coaches will figure out what the best option is in a given situation. The dumber coaches who insist on "esatablishing the run" and running on first down will suck.
