Doug Pederson says this team is the most talented team he’s had. 23 of 29 nfl experts picked the eagles to win the division while many like them to get to the super bowl. I disagree.
Prior to Frank Reich joining the Chargers in 2013, they had the 24th best offensive efficiency in the league. After the hiring, he improved that number to 9th best in the league over the next 3 years. Immediately after his departure in 2016, they finished #18th best. In the 2016 season, he joined the Eagles and took the 26th ranked offense and improved it to 20th best in the first year, and 8th best in his second year and led the offense to a Super Bowl victory. After his departure in 2018, that offensive efficiency dropped back to 16th best. He then improved the 29th best offense in Indy to #8, although admittedly that is heavily skewed due to Andrew luck being out of the lineup in 2017.
Although I like Jim Schwartz on defense, Doug Pederson in my opinion is an average coach who lost a very important piece of his coaching staff two seasons ago. Let's see how the Eagles performed in the 1Q of games over the last two years with and without Reich.
- 2017: 6.6 points per 1q (Wentz 13 games)
- 2018: 2.5 points per 1q (Wentz 11 games)
Yes Philadelphia had a much harder schedule in 2018, but they still had 10 games where they prepared for their opponent all week and produced 0 points in the 1Q. 10 games out of 16.
The Eagles lost 7 starters from the team last year, and added 8 players to the roster in free agency to replace them. A lot of moving parts for an average coach to manage. I'll be the first to admit this team has a ton of talent but I don't believe Pederson can bring out the best in them on his own.
Additionally, the Eagles are now the 2nd oldest team in the league, have the most players in the league who are 29+ years of age, and boast an aging offensive line which has been the strength of the team for the past several years. I see this unit as having more downside than upside heading into the 2019 season.
I like the Giants to be a far improved team this year while the Cowboys are still tough to beat making division wins harder to come by than usual. I'm sure Philly will take care of business against the inept Redskins in week 1, but we'll see how they do the rest of the way. Let's see if the Eagles post Reich can look different than the Falcons post Shanahan.
