Reasons why the Patriots
will be better this week than in the AFC championship game.
·
Gronk - I mentioned how
much more crucial he is to the offense this year since Brady’s #1 target
Edelman is already out for the season. Gronk and Edelman account for more than
40%+ of all of Brady’s targets when on the field together. The Patriots were just
3/12 on third down against the Jags converting just 25% with Gronk playing only
27 minutes. 25% was the 2nd worst third down percentage Brady has had
over the past 2 seasons. Despite all that, they still managed to somehow score
24 points.
· Alan Branch - After being probable
all the way up to game-time, the Patriots top rush stuffer was a late scratch
missing his 5th straight game. The Jags rushed for 101 yards
against New England, but with 2 additional weeks to get healthy – Branch will
certainly provide a boost adding depth w/ Jean Francois.
· Brady – Although Brady looked healthy against
the Jags, he was still playing 3 days after getting 12 stitches on his throwing
hand and was limited during 3 practice sessions prior to the game. He should be
100% with the 2 weeks off and more importantly, will be a full participant in
every practice leading to kickoff.
·
The Patriots beat the
Jags despite losing the turnover margin. New England has always been at the
tops in the league in turnover margin as they turn the ball over less than any
other team in the NFL. Will they lose the TO margin again against the Eagles?
It’s definitely possible with the way Philly’s defense has played, but the #s
say otherwise.
· The Patriots will be facing a lesser Pass rush.
The Jaguars had 54 sacks on the year and showed Brady some pressure, regardless
Brady still put up nearly 300 yards despite Gronk going out early. The Eagles
only had 38 sacks on the year. Additionally, Patriots OT Waddle was out for
last week’s game against the Jags, he’ll be back this game to provide an
additional boost.
· Line value. Prior to the Conference Championship
games, the advanced line was Patriots -7, Eagles +7. This Eagles team is the
EXACT same team they had prior to the Minnesota game, giving us several points
of value.
Reasons why Eagles will
be better than They were Last Week:
· MLB Ellerby was inactive last week against
Minnesota. As one of their defensive leaders, Ellerby’s return will provide
another boost to the Eagles D.
· Jim Schwartz has his defense playing the best of
the year, and will now have 2 weeks of preparation against Brady and New
England’s creative offense.
· Marcell Dareus was a huge problem for the Pats,
as New England only scored 17 points before Dareus left the game (although
Gronk being out had part to do with that). Fletcher Cox will surely give New
England very similar problems in the trenches.
