Jets@Giants recap:Wow, I am still fascinated with
what the Jets have done in the fourth quarter. You can look at this game
by two different views: either you say Coughlin gave the game away, or
you say the Jets have completely earned that win at the end.
View #1:
Up 20-10, the Giants were to kick a FG from about the Jets' 35 or so on
4th and 1. Jets got penalized for a false start - new set of downs for
the Giants which led to a 4th and goal at the Jets' 2yd-line. Coughlin
decided to go for it instead of kicking the FG - Rontez Miles read the
slant route very well and intercepted the pass. The Jets rallied to win
that game with excellent play-calling.
did a GREAT job defensively, shutting down the Giants' rushing attack
almost completely like I expected and holding Eli to 18/34 with a big
72-yd TD bomb to OBJ. It was obvious something like that would happen.
The Giants scored on a punt return TD and on a FG after an Ivory fumble
at the own 20. So the Giants only scored 10 real points offensively with
that one big play. The Jets held the Giants to ZERO TDs on 3 RZ
attempts, even without Marcus Williams and Darrelle Revis.
On the
offensive side of the ball, the protection for Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn't
good, but he still posted a stat line of 36/50 for 390 yards. A huge
compliment goes to the play-calling by Chan Gailey. I always ask myself
why teams are running the ball when they are behind and need to put
points on the board. On the final two drives, Gailey called just one run
play when I remember right. The Jets had FIVE (!!!) drives of 60+ yards
on which they scored. They were moving the chains on offense and the
Giants weren't able to stop Decker and Marshall from catching passes:
20/25 for 232 yards.
My personal conclusion: The
Jets got an advantage after Coughlin went for it on 4th down to come
back, but if you had watched the whole game, you would have seen that
the Jets are a better team than the Giants and earned that win. 5 to 2
scoring drives over 60+ yds says everything. Haters will say the Jets
went all in at the end, but if the Giants were a good team, they
wouldn't have given up these two scoring drives at the end of the 2nd
half and the one in overtime. The Jets just torched them.
Outlook for the remaining games:People
in this thread have been calling me "as delusional as Fireman Ed" when I predicted 8+ wins for the Jets and
were saying they are the same old Jets and stuff. But there is one fact:
The Jets are going to the playoffs, period. They are sitting in a wild
card spot at 7-5 right now with games against the Titans, Cowboys,
Patriots & Bills remaining. 2-2 in those games should seal the way
into the playoffs. The Jets should win against the Titans if they want to be a playoff contender as well as against Matt Cassel. The Patriots are running out of gas without Edelman, Gronk and Lewis and the Jets had a lead in the fourth quarter AT Foxboro. Also the Bills game will be a different one next time. I am banking on 2-2 with a shot at 3-1.
The Jets have had a bad stretch, especially defensively. But everybody knows about the potential of this defense. The front seven plays extremely well and I expect that Revis will come back strong after his concussion absence. Marcus Williams is also a very underrated player in nickle packages. The special teams are the biggest weakness. But what I really like about this team is the offense. Chan Gailey is an excellent play-caller and what I highly respect is that he has gameplans for the weaknesses of opposing teams and adjusts very well in-game. Teams struggle to defend Marshall and Decker. Devin Smith has missed all training camp with broken ribs and was plagued with little injuries and out of sync problems during the season. Against the Texans and Dolphins he showed what kind of threat he can be on deep passing routes. That allows Marshall and Decker to get more separation. If the Jets can work Smith into the mix, opposing DC's will be up at night and that's not a joke. Chris Ivory is punishing defenses on the ground.
Once again, people might laugh at me, but the Jets could be a dangerous team going into the playoffs IF Revis connects with his All Pro performances from the beginning of the season when no one saw a shot against him. He is arguably the x-factor. When looking at the current playoff picture, the Jets would have the toughest matchups against a healthy NE team and the Steelers if they make the playoffs. Brock Osweiler, Alex Smith and Andrew Luck aren't going to beat the Jets when the spot is not given. The Bengals can show us next Sunday how good they really are, wanna wait for that game.
