It is pretty shocking when you read the first 2+ pages (I stopped after 2, personally) and see the posts from someone like DevilFan (and many others) who are completely incapable of grasping what is such a fundamentally simple mathematical concept...
It really sheds some light on the extremely low mental capacity that so many people have... and not just in the gambling world...
How is it difficult to understand this very basic concept... ?
I am going to bet a 4 team parlay on (e.g.) the Colts, Dolphins, Bears and Lions, with the Lions being played on Monday night, and all the other games on Sunday... I will bet $100, and if the parlay hits, I will collect $1100... however, I make the parlay knowing that I will hedge the final game for an amount that will split my liability and my profit in half...
In this scenario (A)... on Monday morning (if the first 3 bets hit), my bet can be broken down as follows... I have bet $100 on a 3-team parlay, which won!!! But now, I am going to roll over that $700 onto a 4th game, which, if it hits, will win an additional $400, for a total of $1100 from my original $100 bet... however, I am going to hedge that last bet, so that I ultimately only end up with exactly $550 in my pocket! In other words, I won a 3-team parlay ($600 profit), and then donated $150 to the sportsbook just for the hell of it!
OR (scenario B)... I can instead, just bet the original 3-teamer for $100... and on Monday morning, I DON'T have to hedge (i.e., I don't "ROLLOVER" my $700 to win another $400, only to donate $150 of it back)... I just keep all $600 of profit... plus the original $100, for a total of $700 in my pocket!
OR (scenario C)... if I know I want to bet the first 3 teams, and I'm not sure I want to hedge the last game, I do the following: bet $100 on a 3-team parlay... if it hits, on Monday morning, I have $700 that I can either "ROLLOVER" onto a 4th game, or just keep my profits and sit tight (i.e. scenario B)... if I roll it over, I will now either collect roughly $133, or $0, for an average of $66.50 in the pocket!
I can assure you, anyone who thinks this is complicated, OR that this is a matter of opinion... that is someone who really has absolutely no business wagering money on anything, until they get a firm grip on VERY basic mathematics!
This is not a case where you can say "you do it your way I'll do it mine"... if you're not doing it my way (aka Van's way)... you're a blithering idiot!
