The change on style of play is everywhere. I watch my Hurricanes the other night let the other team railroad their own Goalie, and not one player even punches/cross-checks or otherwise does anything to the offending player. My own Dad would tell me when I was 7 or 8 that if anyone ever so much as touches your Goalie, I have his permission to go ahead and kick the shit out of that player, or at least try to, and he would back me up at any disciplinary hearings/happenings. that toughness ethic is gone now.
I suspect that in the next 10-20 (maybe 30) years these 2 major things will happen:
1. NFL will switch to "Two-Hand-Touch" or Flag Foosball to reduce injuries/concussions
2. NHL will ban body-checking entirely and fighting will garner multiple games suspensions, rather than a Major penalty
Hope I am completely wrong, but I don't think I am on this one...
