Okay I am a Leaf fan and to be honest have never really been a Kessel fan for what ever reason and when you look at most of the shirts in the crowd I believe I am not the only one.  Having said that this guy has been lights out most of the year and he looks great on team USA.  Why do you guys think he hasn't taken with most of Leaf nation.  I no he doesn't fight other than swing his stick like a lumber jack but man this guy has talent and yet it always seem to come down to he's not a leader and I for 1 don't buy it anymore.  I think his teammates respect him and I think he should be wearing a A on his shirt at some point in the next up coming years.

He is not a vocal leader or a vocal person for that matter.But is he the real deal?Absolutely,as a pure goal scorer.Good enough for me and I'm a big Leaf fan too.

I agree, Kessel  has been impressive all year. He has matured into a leader, no doubt about that.  Hope he continues to showoff his skill in the olympics and also for the Leafs in this run for a playoff spot.

No disrespect to the fine city of Toronto, but really guys? For the rest of us  
Bol today (and we do appreciate Kessel's play for USA).

I have always liked Kessel. I always defended Burke with the trade because there was no way of knowing we'd be giving up the 2nd draft pick at the time. And even up to the start of last year people would still bring up the trade.

But he has always performed well, other than some defensive holes, and a few longer slumps. I would write radio stations on twitter to shut up about the trade already, and that Kessel keeps outscoring Seguin. The constant chatter and whinging was so annoying. It's what Toronto media and fans do best.

Finally, in the playoffs against Boston last year, people finally shut up, the tide turned. People began the 'thank you, Kessel!" chants. Boston fans stopped chirping about it, because they realised what they gave up...and then Seguin was traded for being an idiot. We won.

Have loved the trade the whole time. And loving it even more the past couple of years.

He is a superstar in this league. He finally is playing with some decent players in Toronto. In these Olympics he is showing what kind of damage he can do when playing with some of the best in the world. He has one of the hardest wrist shots I have ever seen.

Phil Kessel is playing his best hockey ever as a Toronto Maple Leaf & and now as a sniper representing Team U.S.A.. The Maple Leafs #1 line right now hasn't been this dominant in a long time not since the golden years of Mats Sundin/Gary Roberts/Alexander Mogilny has the #1 line been so dominant for Toronto.

many of the above are correct don't look for him to take the team on his shoulders to the Stanley cup. he needs support however he is a very good player, streaky at times and this year is one of his best so far..that being said I would not take him in the first round of a fantasy draft next year.

Seriously though. Kessel is at his best on the Olympic ice surface because it is bigger and he has more room to showcase his speed. I agree he has developed into a great player but I still think in the smaller NHL rinks he needs to work on his physical play. 

I think in the end...however...both the Bruins and Leafs have to be happy with the trade. B's ended up with Seguin who now turned into Louis Ericcson and Reily Smith with him and Rich Peverly traded and draft Dougie Hamilton while the Leafs got a top 5 NHL scorer who wanted out of Beantown.

kessel: pure sniper, and there aren't really that many of them around...

however, not exactly sure what you mean when you say "we won"...

1 playoff appearance in 4 years...I mean, that could have happened without kessel, and the team would have seguin and Hamilton, 2 young emerging stars, plus the 2nd rounder...

I suppose burke could be admired for taking such a big risk, and sticking to his guns saying he'd roll the dice again, but on the other hand, his windbag act is long gone...

IMO boston won that deal going away, and they have the 2 cup final appearances and the ring that proves it

gary Roberts, one of my favorite players. would be on the all-time potvin team!

Potvin you are on the money they don't make em like Clark and Roberts any more.  Congratulation's to the woman's team what a comeback the funny thing is it reminded me of the comeback Boston made against our very Leafs last playoffs, just shows you it isn't over till its over.  For the record I think the mens team wins 3-1 and today I think people have been a little hard on them.

He has unreal speed and talent. He seemed out of control early in his career in Boston, but has settled down and looks good. That said, I don't think he is a leader. He still doesn't like the physical play. The open ice suits him well though.
