And you keep forgetting there are 3 more players, one of them a potential 50 goal scorer under your way of thinking.

Kessel and Stajan both average the same amount of PPG this season....(.75)

Explain how one is a future superstar 50 goal heaven sent player, yet the other one is pure garbage.

Both played on the same team...so what excuses do you have for that?

actually he got 36 in 70 games last year as a 21 year old, thats pretty good if you ask me. and he has 17 in 44 games this year and he had no training camp and he had stajan as a centerman, just imagine if he had a true 1st line center.

and hows it week to say white only has a plus rating because he plays against 3rd and 4th liners. last time i checked 3rd and 4th liners dont score as much as 1st and 2nd liners.

He's had 60 points in one season...that's his peak so far.  In 4 seasons.

Nothing to write home about....lots of young guys have shattered those numbers (parise, ovechkin, crosby, etc.)

He's not a true offensive threat like those guys, and he has no intangibles like those other guys.

And those guys make plays happen themselves, they don't need other guys to make them better although of course it helps.

To say he only played against 3rd and 4th liners is stupid.  Half the time they are on the road and they don't even have a last choice of personal they want on the ice.

The only person that will be missed is hagman. with phaneuf we got the kind of player we have not had in a long time. He will be getting top line minutes and he has something to prove, and besides not like we could get much worse were tied for 29th.

I think its a good possibilty especially since the last one was 5-4.

I think Giggy could have a good game tonight and seeing the new offensive depth chart for the Leafs they will be hard pressed to score IMO.

If Phaneuf can play like he did in his rookie campaign, this COULD be a decent trade. If he plays like he has over past couple of seasons, Leaf fans will soon realize how bad this trade was.

One second..I will bump up a thread that was made not too long ago when Dion was with Calgary. Most of the people saying Dion is overrated now said that when he had nothing to do with the Maple Leafs.

I can see it already..Phaneuf enjoys some success with Kaberle on the PP. Burke says well Phaneuf is able to carry the load now and gets rid of Kaberle. Then Phaneuf starts to struggle all over again.

Same reason Gomez is overrated. He needs other players to produce and at his salary that is unnaceptable. Hamrlik played a huge part in Phaneuf's success early on and Regehr had to make up for a lot of Phaneuf's errors in his own zone.

In the salary cap world you are judged by how much you make. He may improve but I can't see him being 6.5 million dollar good.

The difference in Gomez is that he was never really a true goal scorer.

He's clearly a playmaker but hasn't regained his form, and I can tell now he plays with much less intensity then he used to.

He's great at gaining the zone, but has been pretty bad last few seasons.

I never said Kessel has done nothing....I simply said that you cannot label him a high end offensive talent yet or a 50 goal caliber type of guy.

As for Phaneuf, I disagree. White has played better than Phaneuf this year and at a fraction of the cost.

Obviously Phaneuf has some upside as he could regain his form....but that's a big 'if'.  Best player in the deal....sure...but 4 guys went the other way.  Statjan was top 50 in NHL scoring, Hagman 20 goal scorer + White who has shown he can be a reliable NHL D-man.

It'd be different if you were getting a leader as well....but by all accounts this guy is just as hollywood as Sean Avery...argument with the coach in public, argument with veteran and classy vets ala Reghr.

At some point it becomes pointless to argue.  One thing is certain, and it's that if the leafs do anything right it will not be acknowledged by a non-leaf fan.  Its rare that a guy who scores 36 goals in 70 games as a 21 year old receives as much scrutiny as Kessel does.  This thread was about the phaneuf trade, but all the leaf haters have to show up and bring up the kessel trade.  Its funny how people laugh at someone like kessel having potential or possibly becoming a top 10 sniper in the league.  It certianly cannot be thrown out of the realm of possibility.  What is even sadder is that people cannot just enjoy cheering for their own team but instead must choose the "team that everybody hates" to try to show how much they know because they can bash a struggling team

Toronto is known for being arrogant in regards to their hockey club.

Every year it's the same story just with different players.  Anybody the Leafs sign could be a 50 goal sniper, a franchise D-man or a lockdown goalie.  While everyone they give up is labelled garbage (including picks who have yet to be drafted)

There is no bias view in Toronto and it starts with the networks, spewing a Torontonian view of hockey instead of a unbiased view. Even now I still have to read headlines in regards to making the playoffs this season....it's delusional and its annoying.

Lots of guys Kessel's age have put up better numbers. Age is irrelevant in that argument.

36 goals in one season playing alongside one of the best playmakers in the game does not constitute the hype you give him.

Jason Blake put up 40+....so we all know how that played out.

What if it wasn't Kessel but rather say David Booth or Bryan Little....or even Loui Eriksson?

You could make the same argument with those guys (young guys with a 30+ goal season)

You wouldn't use your arguments for Kessel with those 3 guys. But in reality those 3 and others have just as good a chance as Kessel.

long time HARDCORE Leaf fan here  and let me tell you that from my experiences with this organization that  I have every reason to believe that this team does nothing right no matter who's at the helm. Untill whoever the fuck owns this team sell it, NOTHING will ever change they just make WAY to much MONEY to even give a shit about winning let alone bring a  Stanley Cup here....
