I don't think that there isn't anyone on here that doesn't want to see George Zimmerman fry, but this thread was made in very very poor taste Mr. scalabrine.

If you would have made this thread knowing that George Zimmerman was Hispanic, it certainly would have had a much much different thread title. No? Also the opening post would have been only a few sentences.

Completely agree Jay10.

But the way that he presented it was in very poor taste. He(as well as the media) was looking to make an impact on the white community getting away with murder rather than what it was really about and that was the poor kid that died.

It would not have made for a different thread title and I'll tell you why. 

My main problem was with the police and they themselves have been directly responsible for 'race riots' in many cases with too many to name in recent American history. Whether they were murdering unarmed minorities or were caught on tape beating them, or when they fail to investigate a case properly, or manipulate evidence, it is ultimately the police that communities become enraged with in many cases like Trayvon's.

Even if you don't believe I am being sincere in saying that, I have something else for you to consider with regard to Zimmerman's race and its relevance to this thread.

I could have hypothetically written this thread three weeks ago. I chose not to due in part due to personal responsibilities I had to fulfill like we all have. I chose to write it on the night of 3/15 which was, as we now know, a major coincidence.

Zimmerman's race MATTERS. NO ONE is denying that. I said that in the OP. The problem occurs when you purport, as you did in post #3, that it is the ONLY thing that matters and that I wouldn't have created a thread because Zimmerman was Hispanic.

It is not the ONLY thing. But it certainly was very important for nearly three weeks. It was so important, that I used it in my OP as a basis for the police mishandling of this murder because that was a basic fact that was presented to me. 

Well what has happened since the original date of the murder? This case has evolved...as all cases do. This case is taking particularly long to sort out in the public eye evidence-wise, since the police are doing everything possible to suppress evidence from being released with the media fire-storm that inevitably follows.  

Originally, this was a police force failing to arrest a white male in the face of a dead black minor with overwhelming evidence that this was more than just an issue of self-defense for the shooter. 

On the night of 3/15, and not before (even if you believe it to be true), Zimmerman's father came out with the revelation Zimmerman was Hispanic. The intent was clear because he said it himself. He was saying, because his son was multiracial, he was not a racist.

Well what have we learned about this revelation to the Orlando Sentinel on that night? I certainly will trust a father when he tells me the ethnicity of this son. Unfortunately for this father, even that might be questionable. Why? Well in the very same letter, he states: "At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin. When the true details of the event become public, and I hope that will be soon, everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media."

Again the intent of that statement is clear. It is to vouch for his son's character. Unfortunately, it contains a ridiculous inaccuracy, as Zimmerman was known to be standing over a Trayvon's dead body, and in the face of everything known about that case up until that time. Now with the release of the 911 tapes, there is NO DOUBT, Zimmerman approached Trayvon (read the phone call log at 12:18 and 12:23).

The father, as many would be in this case, is clearly desperate to absolve his son of this crime publicly. It certainly calls into question anything else he might say.

But even at that, I'll concede that Zimmerman is Hispanic as he says. 

What has evolved since the shooting as well?

A portrait of Zimmerman's character which will be the lead argument in a court for the defense, if it ever gets that far. Yes, Zimmerman, even as a Hispanic, will likely be painted as a racist looking for a confrontation on that night and it was Trayvon who fought back in self-defense. That is an educated guess but that is how opening statements work for the most part in a case like this imo.

We now know Zimmerman was a neighborhood watchman in his mostly white gated community. He was self-appointed. That says a great deal. Could it be that he is simply a modern day vigilante with no racism in his heart? Maybe. Unfortunately for him, he said something very telling over the phone in that fateful 911 call. He said, "These assholes always get away."

"These assholes"... 

A few hours ago, it was reported that Zimmerman may have also used the words "Fucking c**ns.'

The portrait of Zimmerman that has emerged is one of a profiler, particularly of young black males, and a clear-cut racist against blacks. 

Did that racism matter when we knew Zimmerman as a white man? Yes. That is why I pointed it out.

Does that racism still matter with the revelation Zimmerman could be Hispanic? 

It does. Hispanics can be racist towards blacks and vice-versa. Throw whites in for a trifecta of racism every which way.

What we do know is that the police are the power brokers in this situation. We can suspect they never even asked Zimmerman his race. I personally would never be asked my race if a crime was committed by me or if I was a witness to one. I am white and the police would be none too hesitant to simply report me as a 'white male' without even asking. That could have easily occurred in the case of Zimmerman.

Why would we think this? Because the police report may say so and even at that, it may not identify him at all, only that Trayvon was a black male.

That is of course conjecture. But we do know the national media reported him as such and it may be weeks till we find out why (if ever). 

But your claim that he is Hispanic is not a cataclysmic downfall to my OP as you are painting it. I again, reported a basic fact as I knew it.

MORE OUTRAGE. Why? THE POLICE ARE DOING VERY LITTLE, slowly leaking out information even after being pressed incessantly.

That is why there would be a 'race riot' imo and that is an OPINION based on the facts we knew/know and I still believe it 100%. It is because of THE POLICE and I linked the two words in the thread title. If Zimmerman was white and was arrested there likely would not be a 'race riot.' Because a white man would have murdered a black minor and could have been brought to justice, IF there was an arrest. 

That didn't take place here. As a matter of fact, there have been NO CHARGES to date. THAT is the source of the outrage. That lies with the police.

As far as Zimmerman goes, Charles Blow of the New York Times said it best based on what we now know: Trayvon is black, Zimmerman is not. (11th paragraph -- the article in itself is a good read as well).

I think you should watch the movie 12 Angry Men if you haven't done so. I'll bet there isn't a single person on this site who has seen it who would disagree with the statement, "this is an all-time classic."

Why? It opens with a case that appears very clear cut with almost the entire jury ready to throw the book at the accused. Their reasoning evolves based on what they discuss and what they find out and how they come to understand how their perspectives were previously biased. I won't give away the ending but it is a GREAT film.

Such is the case Trayvon Martin. We all knew his shooter as white. He is now Hispanic. A family still mourns. A community is still outraged. The police, having already botched this case badly, are staying the course and refusing to answer to public pressure and are reacting with the speed of molasses leaking from a barrel. 

Zimmerman had racist intent and was not black. The police still marginalize this boy's death in the face of it then as they do now. The evolution of this case continues with more to come, but at the end of the day, both Zimmerman (White or Hispanic but most importantly, a racist) AND the police will be remembered for what is now occurring.

I didn't read this whole thread, but from the little I did read, it seems like most are just trying to push their own personal agenda.

It's sad to say, but deep down its almost like Scal wants this kind of shit to happen so he can come on here, get some of the facts wrong and talk about race like he always does.

This shit is sad no matter how you look at it, and its depressing that racism still exists. This really isn't the place to try and stop racism, my guess is people on Covers are set in their ways and nothing you say will change that. Just a sad story and I hope the family of this kid somehow get through it.

Interesting, because if you actually read through some of the thread before responding with a statement like that you would find that it was highly unlikely and it was Trayvon was escalating anything based on what we know at this point (especially given a large man in the dark who he was unfamiliar with who we know was armed).



Update at 12:15 p.m. ET: The lawyer, who took an affidavit from the girl, quotes her as saying that Trayvon was walking home from the store Feb. 26 and had temporarily taken refuge from the rain. He then began walking again, when he tells her, according to Crump, "I think this dude is following me."

Update at 12:18 p.m. ET: According to the girl, Trayvon says, "I think I lost him" then moments later says, "He is right behind me again. I'm not going to run, I'm going to walk fast."

Update at 12:23 p.m. ET: Crump, relaying the girl's description of the conversation with Trayvon as the confrontation heats up, says, "She hears other voice, 'What are you doing around here?' Trayvon says, 'Why are you following me?'" At that point, according to the girl, Travyon is pushed and his voice changes.

"She hears the altercation, suddenly, someone just hit the phone, because that's the last she hears," Crump says.

We weren't there. But evidence is leaking out and we can use it.

We're not just gonna sit on our hands in the face of this and say, "Hey, we weren't there. The cops were at the scene. Let's trust their judgement and evidence gathering for its outcome."

They've demonstrated they can't do that properly.

I don't look at this any other way than someone who is in the wrong in shooting this kid..Whether he is prejudice and acted on his feelings or not should be handled in a court of law, not for anyone else who does not know all the facts...The raw evidence of what the kid was doing and holding vs. the guy with the gun is enough to arrest him....Let the facts play out, but this guy needs to be in prison
