Harper is my dog. She is 10 years and 3 months old. Partly my family’s dog, mostly my dog. We have our daily ritual of me letting the 2 younger dogs out when the alarm goes off. I then feed Harpy first. When she’s done, she walks down the hall and out the garage and she goes out and the younger dogs come in to eat.
She loves to go bye bye in the car. She is dying right now from a failing liver and subsequent infection. Despite having stopped eating, she slowly adhered to the ritual this morning.
This afternoon the local veterinarian is coming around 4:00 pm to put her to sleep.
I’m 61 years old and cry like a baby at times. Gentlest dog you’d ever meet. My grandkids hug her, use her as a pillow, she just enjoys it all.
I tell her to wait for me if she can at Rainbow Bridge. Our other dogs that have passed will meet her there. She’ll know them. We’ll all be together again.
I wouldn’t trade her for anything.
Im going to miss her!

Hey paisan God bless you and the pooch . This life is nothing more than making bonds and sharing interpersonal connections and communication . It seems clear to me that you made many strong ones with your pet . So you did things right .
Know for certain that your kindness was appreciated and if you believe that this whole jalopie called existence is a playground for all that is “ life “ to experience in this world and what comes after I’m sure that you will occupy each other’s time again , as well as all those others that are gone that you have loved while here in this space .
God Bless and know this here is not the end but a mere pathway onto our never ending final journey that we all share together in symbiosis .
BACK PATTING and KISSING threads are like passing HAM SANDWICHES around over and over-wall

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

This is what I wrote to my daughters after receiving their condolences:
“I laid down beside her and spooned, holding her tight as she got her shots, telling her how thankful I was for her. I loved her. If there really was a heaven, I’d meet her at Rainbow Bridge and get her before going to heaven. All the other dogs we had that she would know when she got there would welcome her. I hugged and kissed her until her final breaths. And then she passed in her own backyard.”

Every story deserves an ending.

My lil pup is 15. We got her when she was about 10-12 weeks. We are symbiotically bonded. I'm not ready for the day.

Easier to say when you aren’t the one who is going through this but I really believe when you lose a dog, you be as sad as you need to be, for as long as you need to be then get another dog.
No way? Way

First of all sorry for your loss I have also tried losing one - and it is tough even though I dont agree with it being remotely close to losing a loved one humanbeing (and it died with its loved ones around - which is a good way to go)
Normally I would not advocate getting a new pet so quickly after losing another one - because then you are just trying to replace what you lost, which you can't - you should allow and heal through the emotions you have right now the natural way - and then if you feel like it, get another one!
Also because you are basically just pushing these emotions forward - even though you are an older man you can easily outlive another animal - and if you don’t outlive it - it will eat you - which I would also consider a negative.
