 It will also help you heal through the emotions you feel - if you tell people around you how you feel

and maybe show them how sad you are rather than thinking about the next dog the day after - if I were your wife or your kid I would maybe still know that you were sad - if I were anyone else I wouldnt 

Why ? I get that he is sad and I feel sorry for him - of course - no question there, but thinking about buying a new one the day after is not a good idea

 my deepest condolences , one of the hardest things to do , but you owed it to your dog 

 had to go through this twice , actually i was chickening out the first time (Sammy) and my wife and her best friend went to get it done

 second time i will never forget , i held him while getting injected and he was not alone leaving (Dexter)

 we adopted both and had them for 11 and 12 years , happy times 

 i dont think i will ever get another dog , i dont want to go through this again , maybe i am wrong

When people are ready I agree with you, but as far as I understand he lost it yesterday after 10 years of having it around - buying one now would be with the purpose of trying to fill the void it left with a new one - which first of all you can't (it will be a whole new relationship you have to build) and secondly it is ok to be sad and get through it the natural way, then when he feels ready to have a new one he can of course buy a new one --- but considering how close it sounds as he has been to this dog - he will not be ready after one day.

For context: I have also had a dog I loved a lot once I lost - and I have never considered buying a new one, not even once
