Teams that could reasonably be called elite this year...
AFC
KC, Cincy, Buffalo
NFC
Philly, San Fran
Just something to consider... and keep in mind that this past week the 49ers played 80% of the game without their starting QB (a 7th round rookie), and half of the game with a RB as their best option at QB. Now, if you don't think that matters... good luck with your handicapping career!
Personally I'm not sure if any of it matters, because the QB and coaching matchups are off-the-charts in favor of the Chiefs, especially when you consider that Reid will be very highly motivated to beat his old team, and will have two weeks to gameplan for that outcome.
I'm just posing this question for those who seem to have an image of the Eagles as a battle-tested juggernaut of football.
Bottom line: The Eagles have not played ONE game against a team that could by any reasonable measure be called "elite!"

Eagles nearing all-time sack record. With three sacks against the 49ers, the Eagles now have 78 on the season, which is the third-most in NFL history.
Eagles rushing record, Part I. The Eagles scored four rushing touchdowns against the 49ers, which gives them 39 for the season. Not only is that an NFL record, but it breaks a mark that had stood since 1924.
Eagles set rushing record, Part II. With one rushing touchdown against the 49ers, Jalen Hurts now has 15 for the season, which is the most in NFL history for a QB in a single season.
Eagles on a super roll. With their 31-7 win, the Eagles are now just the fifth team in NFL history to win consecutive playoff games by at least 21 points.

This is called reaching... Once you get to the super bowl there is no 'who did they play?' especially when you got there winning the best division (3 playoff teams) earning the top seed, blowing out both playoff games, only losing once when the starting QB was in and even that was after a 15 yard facemask non call turned into a fumble that cost them the Washington game.
Motivation isn't an issue here - it's the super bowl. Of course theyre all desperate to win it.
Either team can win but stop acting like the Eagles are a fraud. The NFL is a parity league.
The Eagles ARE the elite team. That's why they won so many games. The Bengals Giants and Lions were the best teams against the spread they beat the Giants 3 times and the Lions. No one on their schedule looks elite - well maybe that's because they are the elite team. They certainly looked it. They beat Minnesota who was in the playoffs, they beat Dallas twice too.
If you wanna poke holes in SB teams schedule is not where you do it.

Not one of these stats pertains to my post... cool info, though.

I'm not talking about who LOOKS elite.
Are you disputing the list of 5 teams that I qualified as Elite football teams this year? Are you trying to suggest that the Cowboys and Vikings are elite??? I'm just trying to get a sense of YOUR qualifications, at this point.

Tough to analyze. 10 wins vs .500+ teams looks impressive and also a little misleading when you dive deeper into each game. Playing the Giants 3 times, Cooper Rush, 49ers with no QB, etc. At the same point, this definitely isn’t the Vikings misleading record. Watching this team numerous games shows a different story than on paper. I’m not even sure what’s the last team they actually tried against? Seriously, it’s been so long (months)? At least that’s the way it feels to me, instead of looking at inferior scheduling. They absolutely crushed the first half spread this year, and than just suffocated teams to their style of slow play. If they play like that I can see Mahomes on the sideline, just waiting. Honestly, I can’t find much value on either team. Not trying to step in front of Mahomes, which seems his offense this year may be better than years past. Nor a team setting historic records on defense and offense with the Eagles. Hurts has a history of choking mentally in big games, and maybe the Chiefs defense is a little soft (not the pass rush). I think if the Bengals o-line wasn’t banged up, they would have won, and maybe easily.
I guess when talking about “Elite” status, I also find it interesting how the Eagles rank dead last or at the bottom on a few sources that I use. That definitely makes me reconsider the Eagles. Feels like I’m ranting back and forth but a side seems unclear to me right now. Like to hear some more opinions. Most likely avoiding a side though.
Play the game. Don’t let the game play you.

You seem to be implying that the Eagles had an easy schedule and got some breaks along the way? Ok I agree...But do you really think most people on here would consider the Eagles to be a battle tested juggernaut? All the teams that win the Superbowl don't have the same path..
Not every team can be like the Tom Coughlin Giants and slay Dragons in 2007+2011.. Some teams have easier paths to Superbowl victories and that's fine..

That's an interesting example, because those Giants were another example of a team that had to grind through a brutal schedule, against that Pats team, which was playing in the weakest division in football, and in the weaker conference at the time. Yes... some teams have an easier path to get there... and very often they get exposed when they do.

I don't think there's any elite teams this year. Buffalo turned out to be a fraud. Had trouble with the dolphins.
What does it mean to say there are no elite teams? That's a meaningless statement... elite means relative to everyone else. Someone has to be elite, unless everyone is the same. By the way... the Dolphins were underrated by people like you all year, largely because they played BY FAR the most difficult schedule of any team in the NFL!
It's always easy, but always very simple-minded, to dismiss a team as a fraud because they lost their last game.

Lots of good points. To address your last point (how to qualify a team as elite), I think you still have to look at the end result. They got the #1 seed, which earned them an easier path, and they beat the two teams they had to beat to get there, even though those teams were barely competitive. Clearly luck came into play, especially against the 49ers, but there's only so much I'm willing to attribute to luck.
I think it's just as unreasonable to drop the Eagles from the conversation as it would be to drop the Bills, even though they were the SB favorites the entire year, up until they lost.
Still... you are looking at the right things and asking the right questions. None of this is black-and-white, despite the way the majority of Covers "cappers" tend to analyze games.

KC beat the Jags in a close one at home first playoff game. Are the Jags elite? What a silly argument. sounds like you are simply trying to convince yourself that eagles aren't that good.

Did I say the Jags are elite? (See Original Post for answer)
Did I say this is about who the teams have beaten in the playoffs? (See Original Post for answer)
Maybe I'm asking the wrong question, based on most of the responses so far. I guess I should be asking "What percentage of Covers posters are illiterate?"

yes they're all the same. They can lose to anybody. Eagles seem like the only stand out

@Duderonomy "Elite" is just your random opinion of what you think elite is in the NFL
Please feel free to tell me who YOU think the elite teams were this year. My list is not remotely random... I have been making threads every week about my performance ratings. I assure you, more work goes into those ratings than the amount of work you put into analyzing football for a decade!
But again... tell me which teams YOU think are elite!
You are trying to turn this into a different thread... make your own fucking thread! I am talking about WHICH TEAMS WERE ELITE THIS YEAR! I am not trying to do a position-by-position analysis of THIS matchup. YOU DO THAT in your own thread!
This thread has a different purpose, and it's a better purpose, and it will pick the correct winner of this Super Bowl, and yours will not!
