I'm not familiar with Tennis aside from the top players I suppose. But I want to try familiarizing myself with this sport. Just trying it out and see what happens. Small bets that's all,
My first action would be #42 Gael Monfils -500 vs #181 Tatsuma Ito.This is the Shanghai Masters and the match is going to start 6:30 AM EST on Monday - 10/7/2013.
So it's Risking 500 to win 100.
I remember Monfils hanging in there in matches against top tier opponents. Ito on the other hand, being ranked #181 might be out of his league in this matchup.
After winning this bet, I am looking to wager on Raonic on Tuesday morning or on Sabine Lisicki Monday evening. Perhaps I'll take both. Obviously if there is a monumental upset in a couple of hours and Ito wins, then I better think twice about betting on Tennis.

I went with #41 Gael Monfils -500 against #181 Tatsuma Ito. It's a mismatch on paper. Obviously there is always a slight chance of an upset. But I'll lay the chalk on this one. Monfils hangs and bangs with the top tier players in the ATP. I don't think Ito has had many matches against top tier opponents and may be overpowered in this matchup.
If I had to wager, I would have backed #13 Isner in that matchup. Although he lost the first set 4-6 against #83 Giraldo, Isner is now tied up with Giraldo in the 2nd set 4-4. My main play is on #42 Gael Monfils.
#13 Isner defeated #83 Giraldo for the 2nd set 7-5. It's been a close match so far, and it can go either way in the 3rd set. Right now it's tied at 1-1 in the 3rd set. On paper, it pointed to #13 Isner defeating #83 Giraldo. But that isn't the case in this match. The upset ticket is still on. But on paper, you'd say that Isner should win the 3rd set.
Just an update: #13 Isner is now ahead of #83 Giraldo in the 3rd set 3-2.
Also, I am wary of the matchup between #19 Tommy Robredo -690, against #58 Alberto Montanes +505. On paper, #19 Robredo should easily defeat #58 Montanes, but I just have this bad feeling about it, unlike my gut feeling on #42 Monfils match.

The match is about to start in 15 minutes or so. #42 Monfils is 1-4 vs ATP top 10 players so far this year, and he is 21-44 vs ATP top 10 in his career. #181 Ito is 0-0 vs ATP top ten so far this year, and 0-2 vs ATP top 10 in his career. This is a very big difference in quality of opponents between these two. I am beginning to really feel good on my big chalk bet on #42 Monfils -500.

Kamifav thanks for your opinion. I bet on #42 Monfils thinking he'll go on cruise control and not exert the same effort as a majors tournament. And I still believe he should defeat #181 Ito, even on cruise control.
In fact right now in the 1st set #42 Monfils is leading 3-0 right now. Ito is just simply overpowered on this matchup.

My second action would be #14 Sabine Lisicki -830 vs #80 Channelle Scheepers. This is the HP Japan Open and the match is going to start 10:00 PM EST on Monday - 10/7/2013.
Heavy favorite on this one, and rightly so. There is always that slight chance of upset that can happen in any match between a heavy favorite and a severe underdog. But on paper this is a severe mismatch. #14 Lisicki is 13-8 on hard court as opposed to #80 Scheepers who is 5-12. At the same time #14 Lisicki has played against more quality opponents.
Also #14 Lisicki is 3-5 against top 10 opponents this year, and one of those victories was in the 4th round against #1 ranked Serena Williams at Wimbledon several months ago on her way to the finals of that tournament.
#80 Scheepers did face two top 10 players this year, first upsetting #8 Jankovic in extra sets earlier in the year, but got slaughtered in the next round by #16 Ivanovic. Then she faced #9 Wozniacki and was slaighted in straight sets as well.

#14 Sabine Lisicki should win this matchup even in cruise control, as she has faced #80 Chanelle Scheepers a week and a half ago, and knows what to expect from her. #14 Lisicki also has one of the best serves in the WTA. I'm looking at her winning two to one or even three to one in aces and at least a fourth more 1st service points won here.

You're gonna lose all your money betting on that heavy chalk consistently. You'll win for a while then lose all the winnings on one upset. That's all it takes. And best of three a lot more upsets happeb

Thanks for the advise Pie11. I'm still new on betting on Tennis and just wanted to see how this thing pans out. You certainly have a point as the match between #14 Lisicki and #80 Scheepers is very tight, with the match tied 5-5 in the 1st set and #80 Scheepers leading 40-30 on that match point.

#14 Sabine Lisicki barely defeated #80 Chanelle Scheepers in the first set 7-5. She had an advantage of 3-0 in aces, 18/21 to 15/24 on first service won, but lost second service won 6/17 to 10/21. However, she dominated first return points won 9/24 to 3/21.
#80 Chanelle Scheepers is leading 2-0 in the 2nd set and is looking to even this match to go on a deciding 3rd set.

AverageAllstar thanks for pointing out your advise regarding the rankings. I will definitely keep that in mind going forward. Initially this weekend, I familiarized myself with the top 40 rankings, and treated it as if it is the NCAAF Football rankings. But reading other threads in this Tennis forum, and advise from you, I should heed not to look too much into rankings. Also, I read somewhere that there might be a slight dip in effort in key top tier players playing in lesser prestige tournaments as opposed to grand slams and the likes.

#14 Lisicki is serving in the 2nd set and the 2nd set is tied at 4-4. Wow! I shouldn't really look too much into the rankings, but I will stay on my course. But I will definitely look into WTA upsets, or see who is hot. Perhaps that's one way of going about this as well.

Oh yea... 3.) Carry a barf bag to the Women's' matches. They're upsetting for sure!
I have a good feeling after just one day, and looking at the results, that there will be quality upset plays to look at in the future in these types of tournaments without top tier players.
I wonder if these WTA women act like other women where they like to tweet their "feelings" like they are not feeling good because of what they had for dinner or drinks with friends the day before a match, etc. It's too bad there isn't a chart of WTA women's players PMS monthly schedules.

Dude! I posted that like a year ago. I really think that's a major factor! What I haven't done is followed 10 womens schedules. You know... try and see a 28 day trend. Might be worth the study!

Thanks Kamilfav. As the 2nd set was tied at 6-6, I was thinking about what you said. Heavy chalk favorites, I can win several in the beginning, and then lose it in one big upset. I just have to tough out the next few, and then have a different approach to betting tennis. After all, an underdog is going to bite me in the future.
But good thing #14 Lisicki edged out #80 Scheepers 7-5, 7-6
Whew.
YTD: 2-0 +200

Holy smokes you posted it a year ago. I'd really appreciate the link. I'd take a look at the 28 day trend as well. It'd be nice to study a 6 month trend to see if they play through their PMS days, and how they perform. Perhaps just to see how they perform also on Grand Slam events.
