Scal, you miss the boat on this one. This is one of those scenarios when I say you can't speak for black people. This is often misinterpreted as me saying a white man can't speak up for black peope. Or that a white man can't understand, or be sympathetic to a black man's plight. Or his struggle. And that's absolutely not true. What I do mean is that no matter how sympathetic, how much you've read, how "woke" you are, there are certain things you just can't understand about the black community. This brings me to Charlie. If Charlie were black, many in our community would be like, "See, another story of the white man saving the po' black child." It's 'Different Strokes', it's 'Webster'. It's 'The White Shadow'. If Willy Wonka is black we say, "See, another affable black man takin' care of massa's children." It's 'The Green Mile'. Now if Charlie AND Willy are black...now we're onto something! Hollywood would've never let that happen. It stops being 'The Wizard of Oz' and it becomes the 'Wiz'. Great movie but how many white people have seen it?

And before you guys jump all over Scal, he's making a point bigger than Charlie. The book agent says "Why?" to a black main character. The movie producer says "Why?" to a black main character. The GM says "Why?" to the black coach? The designer says "Why?" to the black model. Too many of those in power don't look to black people as viable options. Even though black people are huge consumers. It's because they know black people are more forgiving as consumers. Black people still went to see both film versions of "Charlie..." regardless of the character's race. White people wouldn't have necessarily went out to see the movies if "Charlie" is black. As far as the book goes, does it really matter? I read a lot, mostly non-fiction, but when I read fiction I almost never see race. "Moby Penis" had a black guy and a Polynesian. When the characters are introduced it's like, "Cool." After that, it's an after thought. I digress... Movies and books with black main characters are considered "black" movies. Movies and books with white main characters are considered "Everybody" movies. Is 'James Bond' a "white" movie. It doesn't have to be this way if producers, or literary agents, took more chances. Was 'Blade' a "black" movie? No. And white people went and saw it. I guess where Dahls agent asked "Why?" Scal is asking "Why not?" Still, this is a ridiculous thread.

Can't say that I never seen the movie.  My 7th grade Health teacher put it on before the holiday break but it didn't hold my interest.  I read The Fellowship of the Ring instead.
