That is a bad read on the situation really.
You can read the situation on any timeline on the history of it.
So, the Democrats get the USA involved in Vietnam and you want to blame the Republicans and Nixon for not getting out?
It had become a quagmire of sorts.
Nixon absolutely intended to get out. In fact, he started withdrawing troops within months and never stopped.
The issue became that the USA was now becoming less effective because they were 'relying' on South Vietnam to become efficient on their own.
He even had Kissinger meet with North Vietnamese leaders in an attempt to work out a peace deal.
Then you had the Cambodia situation that directly stemmed from this agitation there.
Then Nixon even tried to swerve China and the Soviet Union in a different direction, in order to ease their support for North Vietnam.
Finally, he decided a massive show of force was the only way to get the two sides to agree to an agreement.
That, was essentially Goldwater's take on it as well.
For example, his famous quote:
"To insist on strength, let me impress you, is not warmongering. It is peace-mongering -- the only kind that has ever worked in the whole history of the world."
This was the only way Nixon could find out.
But to 'blame' the Republicans for not getting out right away after the Democrats had got the USA bogged down is disingenuous or simply not understanding the situation.
Obviously, way more detailed and nuanced than that brief bit above.
But it was never a situation where they could just up and leave one day and abandon South Vietnam to whatever happened.
