I play at AC a lot, and theres this old guy who plays there, is a jerk to everyone, and is known to only play AA, KK, or AK if the pot is raised preflop. that is not a generalization, he literally only plays those hands after a raise. were doin 2/5 NL, i have about 850 in front of me hes got about 700. I make it 20 preflop with 88, he calls. OK, i know what he has. flop comes out 88A. Yup, I flopped quads. He bets 25, I call. turn comes, Ace. I think he may have aces full, so i check to him. he indeed bets 75. I reraise him 100 on top and he calls. If he had KK, he no doubt would have folded here, as he is ridiculously cautious. River comes, A. I bet 100, he goes all in.
I sit there for a minute. I have committed 320 to the pot. If I fold, i am still up over 300, not a bad pay day for a college kid. If I call, I am either up a shitload or im broke for the day. this guy literally never fucking bluffs, as in ever. not, oh hes done it 2 times in the last year, but as in NEVER. I fold.
The guy says he won't show, because he is a real dickface. I turn my 4 8s over to show him what i laid down, and say, just show me the ace so i dont go kill myself. the guy looks at me like he can't believe what he has just seen. he then says "only because a. i have never seen a hand like that in my life and b. i have never seen someone lay down quads...." he flips over AK
good fold by me, but wtf, that turn and river killed me
i could be all pissed off about it, but i figure i could play my entire life and never see that again.
what is the best hand you guys have laid down?

Well, since A. was in play, it's too bad that B. wasn't. Probably would have been a nice payout if they would have had a jackpot. And surely you would have put him on a higher kicker than an 8. Tough lay down

yeah bad beat jackpots are nice...they make it so when u have aces full or higher, you hope you lose, which is kind of strange
the thing that sucks is that feeling u get when u flop quads and know someone has and A....I was already about to call my buddy and tell him that I can now afford the cancun trip we have been planning. sux that the aces had to come

Youngone very mature of you to title this as best lay down rather than FUCKING BAD BEAT it shows your maturity in the game and understanding this shit happens in poker. I would have labelled it worst bad beat in history. Iam still immature when it comes to poker.

i have the tendency to only really remember hands as "bad beats" if it busts me out of the game. had he put me all in after the flop and i called and lost, then i wouldnt be so easygoing about it.

Good lay down YoungOne. Since u knew he had an ace it really wasn't that hard to lay down just unlucky board for u. Since this guy on plays the 3 hands u mentioned with a preflop raise, does he get much action? If so, I suppose it is not from the regulars. Do you see him win much?

let me explain this guy to you. ppl who play everyday at the borgata all know him. he is old and senile. he sits down and doesnt call unless he has what i said earlier. he also then yells at ppl if they call him and beat him. just an all out asshole, i have heard dealers making fun of him.
snw, i see what u are saying, that since i knew what he had its easy to lay down a hand lesser than that, but i flopped quads man. laying that down is never easy

If you knew had I had aces full on the turn why not just push there? He will never lay down aces full......that being said you wouldve lost this hand, but at least you would have hiom committing his stack to a one outer.

Covers holds a PGA contest every year beginning with the Masters and ending with the PGA. Basically it's picking players weekly during the tournys and whichever Covers' member has the lowest score to par wins the contest and gets slapped with this special champ tag. Anyone can join so remember to check out the golf forum regularly leading up to the Masters

I think I would have pushed for more than 100 too. Put all the pressure on him.

I knew that would get a response from you spoon. I wasn't trying to say that it is easy to fold quads, I was trying to give YoungOne credit for a GOOD READ which made folding HIS QUADS a great play. I would probably have pushed all-in on the turn thinking there is no way this guy folds a boat but I would have lost more money on that hand.
Spoon,
As good a player as you seem to be I'm sure you would have laid down quads in that situation and no it would not be easy but if you have a good read then it is a no brainer in that particular hand. I'm sure you would not have called because you have a good feel for reading players.
On a separate note, why do you feel you always need to be a smartass when making your comments on a post? Do you think that makes you look smart? Do you think that you are the only one who has an opinion and that the rest of us are not to your level?

YoungOne, I agree it is never easy to lay down quads but you made a great read and a great laydown. I would have lost more because I would have pushed all-in on the turn. Again, I was not saying it is EASY to lay down quads, I was just giving you credit for great poker and knowing when you are beat.
Good Luck

i think the impressive thing here is that you didn't shove on flop or turn since you know he could be very likely to call you, i don't think the river fold is all that impressive, now if you folded on the turn and he flipped the quads that would be a disgusting laydown. That showed a lot of disipline and in this circumstance paid off for you I prob would have shoved on flop or turn based on the read you described. So you played the hand well but i don't think the river fold was the best part.

-smw, if you were trying to give him credit for a good fold, then why would you say it wasnt that tough? Usually when im trying to give someone credit for making what i consider to be a good laydown, i dont say it wasnt tough.
- to answer ur questions, I feel the need to be a smart ass when i deem (sp?) a comment to be, 'stupid', to be frank. I see no reason to come into this thread and say, wow young one, unlucky board etc etc he knows that and i figured that would get posted hundreds of times anyway. But when i come in here and read "its not that hard to fold quads", i dont know how you can expect not to get called out.
Obviously other people have opinions otherwise this wouldnt be a forum....and it would just be me or someone else posting their thoughts for others to read.
i dont think that i am on a higher level than everyone , but in terms of poker id say some, but its not like im just calling out people and never putting out anything. I think i give some of the most thorough write ups of anyone in this forum and hopefully informative as well. Check anything, any time i post it is usually a paragraph worht with extensive examples and write ups.
