Herd immunity likely NOT attainable
as many Americans decline vaccine

For almost a year, Americans have been looking forward to herd immunity,
when enough people are protected through vaccination or past infection to
stop the spread of COVID-19.

But with about 25% of Americans (mostly republicans) saying they might not
get immunized,  herd immunity is simply no longer an attainable goal.

The split has become political.
Almost 80% of self-identified Democrats say they have been vaccinated or
intend to do so soon, compared with only 46% of Republicans.

Herd immunity is "theoretically possible but we as a society have rejected that,"
said Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group.
“There is no eradication at this point, it’s off the table.”

Anti-vaxers are desperate for freedom.  Irony is that refusing vaccines is counter productive as it undermines effort to lift restrictions.  Without herd immunity, coronavirus wouldn't be eradicated since it can still spread.  That means people would have to live with coronavirus for a longer time.  Perhaps, similar to common flu which mutates often and requires annual vaccination.
