Sheriff Joe today deployed 500 armed volunteers to patrol outside 59 schools in metropolitan Phoenix. 400 of these volunteers are part of 3,000-strong Joe's "Posse" and another 100 volunteers known as reserve deputies are taking part in the patrols.
Arpaio said no taxpayer money would be spent on the patrols and volunteers will be supervised by radio or phone by deputies. The Sheriff said he wanted the public to be aware of his plan for maximum deterrence value:
“I want everybody to know we’re there. Our posse is trained to take action. We’ve got some [volunteers] with automatic weapons; I’m not afraid to say that,” Sheriff Arpaio said.
Members wear uniforms and can get authorized to carry a gun after training., ... The Posse operations generally don't receive taxpayer money and instead are funded through contributions and dues paid by posse members.
The reserve deputies who will join posse members in the school patrols have all the training and powers of a regular law enforcement officer but aren't paid for their police work.
Sixty-four percent of Americans support increasing a police presence in schools, while 29 percent oppose it, according to a Christian Science Monitor/TIPP poll conducted Jan. 2-7. The NRA proposed a similar plan in response to the Sandy Hook murders. Conservative and Libertarian groups have proposed expanding this plan to include licensed concealed carry gun owners who are teachers, parents and school administrators.

If God exists then He must be so proud of the culture of violence we've created for ourselves. Instead of just getting rid of guns we just give more people more guns!
There are cops in CT, right? That didn't stop that maniac...what makes you think these guys will? Seems to me like it's just an excuse for a bunch of gun-happy clownshoes to show off their toys...

Repercussions from a Henan (China) school knife attack that injured 23 pupils last month are still being felt as Beijing security officials announced on Wednesday that every kindergarten, and primary and middle school in China will hire at least one full-time security officer.
The officials, from the Central Comprehensive Social Management Commission that oversees law enforcement, said they had ordered a nationwide crackdown on crimes in neighbourhoods near schools. .
The announcement, reported by the People’s Dailyon Thursday, comes weeks after a man stormed into a village school and slashed several young children in a.brutal attack.
The suspect, Min Yingjun, 36, who was mentally ill, rampaged through the school for more than half an hour before he was stopped. Lacking proper weapons, school staff and nearby residents used brooms to take him down

Agent cooper. How do you get rid of 300 million firearms in the country.
At least you are honest and don't pretend to believe in the right of personal ownership of firearms. I actually respect you for your honesty.
Rick,
You and I seem to wind up on the same page a lot. People talk about gun control as if we were starting some new island nation, when, in fact, we already have oceans of guns we'll never be able to get rid of. As long as I'm pretty sure the bad guys can get them, I'm all for the good guys having access to them as well.

i think i agree with this. there's what i'd like to see happen and then there's what is realistic. and i don't want to get in the frame of mind so many people have where they say, well if i don't need a gun, then other people don't either.
i'm all for talking about gun control laws and listening to various options, but until i hear one that would be effective in some way, my preference is that we don't need any more laws and we don't need any more government intrusion.

300 is an extremely misleading number....
Most people who own a firearm, own more than one making up for the other millions of people that don't have them. So in other words there are far fewer people with firearms than 300 m.....

Joe's "posse"
And then there was Jacob Cutler. According to a Flagstaff police report, Cutler threw his girlfriend to the ground and choked her while trying to sexually assault her in 2008. When she didn’t cooperate, he allegedly threatened to call police and said they would side with him, because he “has a badge.” He was a member of Arpaio’s posse at the time.
"Don't get me wrong, I've done some things in my life that I'm not proud of," said Michael Hoopingarner who admits to being arrested for cocaine possession in 1999. "It's stuff that may not even be on paper. It's stuff that I had to disclose when I joined." ... A posse applicant "could be disqualified" if they have a felony conviction, have used illegal drugs excessively, or sport a misdemeanor narcotics conviction, according to the sheriff's office posse application. Despite Hoopingarner's disclosure, he was hired on the posse.
Kevin Ray Campos was arrested in 2007 outside a Scottsdale club for disorderly conduct. According to the police report, he spit on several bouncers and then hurled profanities at a Scottsdale police officer. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, according to court records, and was hired as a posse member a year later.
And then there’s the accusation from 2007 that a driver backed into Clark’s car and then left the scene. Clark allegedly followed the car, rammed the vehicle and held the driver and passenger at gunpoint, all while he was off-duty.
Yet, Clark still remains in the posse.
Oh and there's mention of other sex offenders in his posse. GO JOE !

Ok, say there are 500,000 people with 600 Guns each.
How would you get those?
1 mil wiht 300 each?
More than likely we are looking at over 100 million armed citizens and probably another 90 million that are sympathetic with their cause (that cause being individual gun ownership).

S*it like this posse does not solve anything. I don't want these pseudo-police with guns anywhere near me and my family the same way I don't want psychopaths with guns anywhere near me and my family. I mean, how hard is it to understand that?
Yea, I get it, there's lots of guns out there. What I don't understand is why gun owners and pro-gun people aren't outraged by that. The BEST solution you can come up with is "oh well, since bad guys can easily get guns then I need to be easily get guns." LOL, it's ridiculous. If that's the only solution to this issue then seriously you get an F minus in problem solving.
If you REALLY cared about protecting your family you'd support measures to reduce the amount of guns floating around and the ease of obtaining them. You want your guns, fine...but then why don't you try to darn*in help instead of dragging society backwards. I want to live in 2013, not the wild west, or during the Revolution. 14daroad is always putting up stats...find me some stats on gun violence during Billy the Kid's days, what was life expectancy then? How many gun deaths were there?

In one of the first threads created after Sandy Hook I posted most people wouldn't be upset if tax payers had to pay for this position to be created.
Imagine a city, county (parish if you live in Louisiana) or state putting that on a ballot with no pork to go with it (like DC does all the time).
A city would be an easier example to explain because it is on a smaller scale: A town of 25,000 individual tax payers pay $1 a year to go towards a school security position. Every cent goes to this position, not to administrators at City Hall or some other position created by bureaucrats. $25K/yr would be raised to either create a full-time position or subsidize off-duty cops security details. If said town thinks $1 isn't enough and it should be $2 then put it on a ballot and let voters vote on it. I think a bill like that would pass everywhere.

I hear what you are saying but that's unrealistic since neither side.......
