Really? History disagrees, Since WWII (where dictators were eliminated all over the world) I have seen and read about a lot of dictatorships turning into democracies, Eastern Europe, South East Asia, Africa, South America...
Egypt wasn't a democracy - they still think like they have for 50 years, the majority disregarding the minority (49%), A real democracy respects the minority.
And you don't become democratic in a year. Most Western countries have developed their democracies over periods of 70-100 years.
Absolutely democracies exist.
Absolutely not where religious affiliation provides the makeup of the various political factions.

If a politician here talked about "god" he would be ridiculed and have no chance of getting elected.
Wouldn't you call the religious right a powerful faction? Tea Party? Some of the members are equal to the Islamists in the Middle East.
As far as I know, the religious right is not directly responsible for deaths nor advocates for deaths of its enemies, unlike some of the extreme religious political factions in the countries I indirectly referenced.
In the event the US suddenly become a country with several political parties, each of which taking a different perspective on proper and dominate religion and with each religion/political faction becoming enemies with its rival, the above might change, and we certainly would lose out on democracy.
