The VA Tech shooter used a .22 and a 9mm, both legal handguns. He killed 32.

On a side note, VA Tech was only the second deadliest mass murder in U.S. history.

In 1927 forty four people were killed at a school in Bath Township, Michigan. 38 of them were children.

The perpetrator used bombs to commit the act.

Were bombs legal back then?

And I would guess that in 1927 dynomite was probably legal.

Hard to aim when there&#x27;s jalapenos in your eyeballs.

Gun bans work at few places such as airplanes and prisons which are true gun-free zones.  However most places aren&#x27;t gun-free zones such as schools and theaters because people can still carry guns inside.  Since guns are so widespread, buyers are likely to find sellers despite bans.

A serious gun law, like door to door confiscation?  That is the only way the guns are coming off the streets. Not sure how anyone can consider the draconian gun laws of Connecticut "half assed", they are among the strictest in the nation.

Facts?What you give are subjective opinions based on taking data and forming it to solidify your position.My contention isnt based on a stat or some slanted numbers or data which is trying to support an opinion, rather the way the subject is dealt with.We have some of the softest gun laws and regulations in the world, especially for our economic and political framework. If the US wants to change the outcome we just experienced, AND will experience again and again then a stronger position would need to be taken.You are correct though..we have allowed the gun lobby and industry to flood our markets with so many guns that serve no purpose of protection, they are excessive and unnecessary to protect..that it would be difficult to remove them from the system. Difficult is a term that does not mean impossible..BUT at the end of the day, money and profits rule our government so I expect little to be done and the killings to continue.

The question for me has never been whether banning assault weapons will "work" or somehow stop all these events which seem to have a form of mental illness at their core combined with other factors. Of course it won't but that's an immature & extreme argument some like to use.. I guess thinking it somehow bolsters their views. Most reasonable folks recognize tha kind of thinking to be as silly as saying since mental health care, no matter how well funded, affordable & accessible will not prevent mental illnesss, it's a waste of time & money. Or that because seat belts won't prevent all death/injuries in car wrecks, they should be abolished.

The question is in our society today, would banning assault weapons along with stricter regs & background checks lessen the number of innocent deaths/injuries & the answer is yes imo. By how much, who knows but even it was only a small number it would be worth it. On the other side, you also have this ridiculous argument in regards to the interpretation of the 2nd amendment & what seems to be a in terms of tyranny & taking away all weapons which will never happen in this country. I suppose if gun makers came up with a weapon that shot missile like projectiles that blew up & burned bldgs and they became popular & widespreadly used by criminals & the mentally disturbed in mass killings, they would be defending their legality & sales/use as well.
