Russia's economy is getting devastated by Western sanctions -
led by US President Biden - and the ruble's swift recovery has
only been made possible by Moscow's efforts to prop the currency
up artificially, the senior Treasury official said.

The senior Treasury official said Russia's economy is plunging
into recession and getting crushed by crippling inflation.

Although the ruble has bounced back to pre-invasion levels,
the Treasury official argued the currency's purchasing power
has been decimated by skyrocketing prices in Russia.

Russian diplomats being expelled

Denmark said on Tuesday it would expel 15 Russian diplomats, in line with steps taken by other European Union countries, after reports of mass graves being found and of civilian killings in the Ukrainian town of Bucha.

The move comes after several other European Union countries including France and Germany on Monday said they would expel Russian diplomats.

Moscow, which claims images of executed civilians in Bucha were fake products of Ukrainian and Western propaganda aimed at discrediting Russia, said it would retaliate for the expulsion, RIA Novosti reported.

New York (CNN Business) Russia is in imminent danger of default
after the President Biden cut off Russia's ability to pay its debt
using frozen dollars sitting in American banks.

President Biden has now signed a new executive order banning any new investments in Russia and Russian companies.

Biden provides more help to Ukraine

The Pentagon will send a second batch of arms to Ukraine
as the country enters its second month under Russian invasion.

The U.S. will send a variety of equipment to aid in Ukrainian
defense, including 10 Switchblade drones, which are armed
with tank-busting warheads, according to multiple reports.

The equipment is part of the $300 million in lethal military
assistance announced by the Pentagon last Friday, which
also includes tactical secure communications systems,
nonstandard machine guns and other defense systems.

Western countries sanctioned about half of Russia's foreign reserves
— roughly $315 billion — because of its invasion of Ukraine.
Although the US Treasury had been allowing Russia to use some of
its frozen assets to pay back certain investors in dollars, the Biden
admin this week blocked the country from accessing its stockpiles.

That could force Russia to offer pay its debts in rubles — or not at all.
Either action would constitute a default, Fitch Ratings said last month.

In addition to the Treasury's decision to cut off Russia's access to dollars,
the Biden administration on Wednesday announced new sanctions on
Russian financial institutions and individuals.

Russian energy giant Gazprom said on Friday it was exiting its business in Germany, amid a dispute between the two countries over Putin's insistence on switching payments for Russian gas to rubles only.
It was not immediately clear how the move would affect the supply of Russian gas, on which Germany currently uses for about 40% of its needs.

Of course Germany is taking a big risk, but circumstances here are forcing their hand in a hurry.

All Ukraine-supportive nations that currently draw energy from Russia are seriously looking at immediate and longterm methods of reducing their reliance on Russian sources.
