The lumber markets are off to a robust start in 2017, as U.S. housing data show that the number of new homes available -- along with the sale of new homes -- are rising, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Home builders are employing more people and their purchasing orders of raw materials are increasing, particularly in lumber.

Maybe a few % but not 30% on the most needed product.   Who is gonna eat that?   Not the builders, that&#x27;s for sure.   I built and sold a house last year... a 30% increase on lumber would have made it not worth doing.  The large volume cookie-cutter builders can get by, but the guys who do 10 or less houses a year would get killed.

It has traded between 28 and 38 for roughly 4 years. I'd say it looks more toppy than ready to break out into a new uptrend. I predict it is more likely to see 28 before 48.

Yeh 30% is a big pill to swallow that is for sure. The softwood dispute has been going on for years, a new deal will stabilize these prices. Most in the industry knew something was coming when the current deal expired, that was the point of my previous post.

I live 30 mins from one of the largest pulp mills in eastern canada. The mill itself wouldnt exist without subsidies from various players such as nova scotia power and federal/provincial government. Our industry recieves a lot of breaks from various levels of government and that is the main problem with striking a new deal, not a level playing field.

Was trump the reason for this spike of course not. I suspect he will be adressing this issue post haste.

Sorry nature not sure which wood you are referring to. Im no expert in the pulp industry, i fish lobster. The example i posted regarding subsidies at the local mill was intended to demonstrate the inequalities in the canadian and US markets in general. It is actually a paper mill producing supercalandered paper. I believe a mill in maine that produces the same type of paper has filed more than one grievance regarding the subsidies which allow the mill to sell the same product for less than the its US competitors. The softwood lumber dispute has more to do with stumpage rates and things that i know little about.

I just think it is unfair to lay the blame on trump 3 months into his presidency.

For decades, there have often been lumber trade disputes between US and Canada. Since US does not have enough lumber to meet domestic demand, it relies on Canadian imports.

Blame US lumber industry lobby for higher duties or prices and restrictions on cheaper Canadian lumber. Americans may pay more under Trump protectionist policies for better deals in international trade.

A robust housing market is one of the best ways to stimulate economic growth. However higher housing costs can reduce demand and jobs in construction.

No,,,,,the blame for cheaper Canadian soft lumber falls on the Canadian federal and provincial Governments who unfairly subsidizing the lumber industry in Canada with financial aid making Canadian Soft lumber cheaper..Canadian subsidies are the main reason why the Canadian softwood lumber &#xD;&#xA;producers and American softwood lumber producers are at a loggerheads ...not the US lumber industry lobby...

Environmental activist groups have been a powerful proactive lobby. Vast amounts are locked into the bureau of land management that restricted cutting mining and grazing utilized a more wildlife perfered habitat and stopped timber tract harvest for many years.

Oregon protest was about grazing restrictions. However in the west a growing bipartiso. Compromise is being studied. In an effort to control forest fires a fire break or the removal of all vegetation done for a 5 mile by state swath to have a natural break in fire prevention from escalation do to wind concerns. And hence billions of board feet of softwood could be harvest over a continual generation continues cut. Hence grass grazing concerns also addressed as grazing cattle will natural remove shrub growth.
