An Iranian nuclear scientist who helped the United States obtain information about the Islamic republic’s covert nuclear program and who was later executed for treason was discussed in emails on Hillary Clinton’s server, according to the Washington Examiner.
Now, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton wants to know whether the discovery of scientist Shahram Amiri, whose body was returned to his family with rope marks around his neck, had anything to do with the “reckless” lack of security on Clinton’s private server.
“I’m not going to comment on what he may or may not have done for the United States government, but in the emails that were on Hillary Clinton’s private server, there were conversations among her senior advisers about this gentleman,” the Republican senator said during a Sunday appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“That goes to show just how reckless and careless her decision was to put that kind of highly classified information on a private server. And I think her judgment is not suited to keep this country safe,” he added.
According to the Examiner, Amiri had disappeared during a 2009 religious pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, but showed up in the United States a year later at the Iranian interest section of the Pakistani embassy, demanding to be sent home to his country. He claimed to have been abducted by the CIA, but U.S. officials said he’d cooperated willingly, according to the BBC.
That’s when the emails began being exchanged about Amiri on Clinton’s server nine days before his return to Iran, the Examiner reported.
“We have a diplomatic, ‘psychological’ issue, not a legal one. Our friend has to be given a way out,” read an email Richard Morningstar, a former State Department special envoy for Eurasian energy. “Our person won’t be able to do anything anyway. If he has to leave so be it.”
Remember when Hillary claimed that no classified information had been knowingly passed through her personal email server? Are Iranian nuclear spies somehow not classified information? If that’s now Clinton views it, I think we can start to identify part of the problem straight off.
Though originally welcomed back to Iran, he was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to prison, according to the BBC.
On Sunday, Iran confirmed that Amiri had been hanged for treason, the Examiner reported.
