In Nebraska's first State Execution since 1997 Carey Dean Moore was given a lethal injection of Fentanyl. Moore was convicted in 1980 of the first degree murders of two cab drivers. This is the first time Fentanyl has been used by any State for a lethal injection.
What I find interesting is that Nebraska voted to abolish the Death Penalty in 2015. The current Nebraska Governor, Republican Pete Ricketts, at the time helped finance a ballot drive initiative to reinstate capital punishment after lawmakers overrode his veto. With the help of $300K of Ricketts own money, the issue was put back on the 2016 general election ballot.
My question is... Regardless of which political side you stand, how do Nebraska voters live with themselves?

goose, you have to understand, as small government conservatives, they know how corrupt and flawed the government is. they can't get much right. that same government, of course, is responsible for arresting people and proving people are guilty in a system that we all know has serious flaws, not to mention the discrimination against the poor and minorities inherent in that system. and that's how we arrive at the death penalty in this country. but, despite those significant flaws and the fact that we know that innocent people get convicted of crimes all the time, including innocent people who were fortunate to have all the factors in place to be proven innocent through dna and taken off of death row, we still need to kill everyone who remains on death row because most of them are guilty and the innocent ones are just collateral damage, i guess. that's the small government pro life conservative way.

I appreciate your response but understand I am NOT defending this POS that got executed. But I do have a problem with politicians who think they can buy the Law any time they choose. IMHO that is completely unacceptable. It boggles my mind that Nebraskans would tolerate that insanity regardless of political affiliation.

This state does the dumbest garbage all the time. How about not passing a bill for casinos years ago? I realize that casinos do bring negative aspects attached with them; for example an increase in crime. The point is I live in Omaha. The casinos are 15 mins away in council bluffs IA. We live with all the negative aspects and get none of the benefits that come with having a casino in your city.

I hear you WalkyTalky. I'm in Connecticut and for the past 25 years the two biggest Indian Casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, operated without competition. Located in the southeast corner of the State and literally within minutes drive of the State of Rhode Island the two casinos reaped the benefits of out-of-State patrons. While Rhode Island eventually smartened up and has been operating the Twin River Casino, the State of Massachusetts is set to open up their first mammoth casino, MGM, in Springfield next week.
So what was the problem? In a word... POLITICIANS. Everybody had to get greased for the process to work it's way through the corrupted jungle.
Getting back to this Nebraska case with the Fentanyl execution, the interesting thing is that the Big Pharma corporations actually hate this type of publicity. It's bad business for their products to be cast in such a derogatory fashion and fought vigorously in the court system to prevent this event. I understand the State of Nebraska had to hunt the Fentanyl down though some thirty sources and through six different States before they could obtain the product. Nebraska STILL refuses to say where, when and how the Fentanyl was secured. And Nebraskans don't seem to give a rat's azz one way or another.

Less upset Doja? You sound like an agitated TV addict. Turn off the boob tube, stop watching both Fox News and CNN and you will live a better life. Fact.
Fentanyl is unquestionably the most positive form of any State execution. Just gently slip into internal sleep. We've no doubt come a very long way from the electric chair.
But why does everybody seem to want to avoid the real issue here. Ricketts is a baastard politician. A real criminal in every sense of the word. And again, I don't care if you're Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative, Ricketts needs to be held accountable. This man is EVERYTHING that is completely wrong with today's political scene debacle.

This was a ballot referendum.. the people of Nebraska who voted on this measure voted to repeal the death penalty ban 60% to 39%.
The Gov. may have donated $300,000 of his own money to aid the pro-death penalty group.. but his donation was among the $1.3 million spent through early November by Nebraskans for the Death Penalty..
The other side of the coin..... people who were against the repeal "Retain a Just Nebraska" also got some high-profile help, collecting $2.7 million..One of its major donors was a Massachusetts organization, the Proteus
Action League, which gave $1.2 million $650,000..
Regardless of how it got on the ballot ...in the end it was the people of the state that voted to repeal the ban..

Slim: What I truly appreciate most about you is your lack of ignorance. And over the years you have proven to be most sincere. Using your own figures, if a standing Governor personally donates 20% of total contributions to a cause which condemns lives to certain death, and HE gets to pull the trigger, in essence playing God himself, that is A-OK with you? To quote you... "in the end"... the people VOTED. So my question remains valid. How do Nebraskans live with themselves?

TheGoldenOne,to answer you "Q" ...I don't know how Nebraskans live with themselves, but a majority did vote for the repeal...Nevertheless,he was sentenced to death in 1979.This was the seventh time Moore faced executioners ...on each previous occasion the execution was halted at the last minute...after one occasion he even said ...he very much tired of all of this prison life, being on death row. He himself really wanted it to end...
What is it that bothers you so....the Governor did not convict him a jury did..a jury sentenced him to death ..he was a condemned man and the law was followed out..If, the Governor spent his own money to push for the return of capital punishment he should be free to do so..and Governors in states that have the death penalty do get to play God and decide a condemned mans fate ...on whether to grant clemency or not at the time of execution..
Again, I ask you what is it about Moor's execution that bothers you?
Governor Ricketts ,the people of Nebraska or the use of Fentanyl as a lethal injection ?

Not bothered at all about Moore's execution. Already agreed that Moore was a POS. It's Ricketts I don't like. Don't like his dark-money connections. Don't like his closeness to the Koch brothers. Don't like how his family's TD-Ameritrade gobbled up Scott. H3LL, I don't even like his bald head. Is that enough "don't likes" for you?
