President Obama claimed that his administration’s $400 million payment to Iran had nothing to do with the release of the four American hostages held there, but rather was the first installment to repay the failed 1979 arms deal with the last Shah of Iran prior to the Islamic revolution.
The Wall Street Journal reported:
“New details of the $400 million U.S. payment to Iran earlier this year depict a tightly scripted exchange specifically timed to the release of several American prisoners held in Iran.
The picture emerged from accounts of U.S. officials and others briefed on the operation: U.S. officials wouldn’t let Iranians take control of the money until a Swiss Air Force plane carrying three freed Americans departed from Tehran on Jan. 17. Once that happened, an Iranian cargo plane was allowed to bring the cash home from a Geneva airport that day.”
On Aug. 4, Obama claimed that the reason why the payment had to be in cash was because the U.S. and Iran do not have a banking relationship that would allow a check or wire transfer.
Congress plans to hold a hearing on the payment once they are back in session after the summer break. Wisconsin Republican Rep. Sean Duffy has already requested records of the transaction.
This new information provides even more evidence that the cash was likely a ransom paid to to release the American hostages despite Obama’s claims.
According to WSJ:
“One of the Americans released in January as part of the prisoner exchange, a pastor named Saeed Abedini, said he and other American prisoners were kept waiting at Mehrabad airport from Jan. 16 to the morning of Jan. 17. He said in an interview that he was told by a senior Iranian intelligence official at the time that their departure was contingent upon the movements of a second airplane. Mr. Abedini said he has been asked to testify next month before the House Foreign Relations Committee.”
Clearly this was a ransom, and like the rest of the Iran nuclear deal a massive, embarrassing, and dangerous failure of the Obama administration.
Now enemy countries can be emboldened by the idea that Americans are willing to pay ransoms to get hostages back. Not only that, but Obama gives over a billion dollars to and lifts sanctions on Iran, a country that states it wants to wipe Israel, our strongest ally in the Middle East, off the face of the earth.
America cannot have another eight years of failed Obama administration policies, and that’s exactly what Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is proposing. GOP nominee Donald Trump needs to win in November or God only knows how much damage Clinton will do.
