(AP) The Ford carrier strike group has arrived in the
far Eastern Mediterranean, within range to provide
a host of air support or long-range strike options for
Israel if requested, but also to surge U.S. military
presence there to prevent the war from spilling over
into a more dangerous regional conflict,
a U.S. official told The Associated Press.

Biden sending second carrier strike group in support for fight against terrorism threatening America's allies

The Pentagon has ordered a second carrier strike group
to the eastern Mediterranean Sea and is sending Air Force
fighter jets to the region as Israel prepares to expand
its Gaza operations, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin
said in a statement Saturday.

The US warships are not intended to join the fighting
in Gaza or take part in Israel’s operations, but the presence
of two of the Navy’s most powerful vessels is designed to
send a message of deterrence to Iran and Iranian proxies
in the region, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Biden administration is reducing the types of semiconductors that American companies will be able to sell to China, citing the desire to close loopholes in existing regulations announced last year.

On Tuesday, the US Commerce Department unveiled new rules that further tighten a sweeping set of export controls first introduced in October 2022.

The updated rules “will increase effectiveness of our controls and further shut off pathways to evade our restrictions,” US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement. “We will keep working to protect our national security by restricting access to critical technologies, vigilantly enforcing our rules, while minimizing any unintended impact on trade flows.”

Biden OKs naval missile action

A US Navy warship operating in the Middle East intercepted multiple projectiles near the coast of Yemen on Thursday, two US officials told CNN.

One of the officials said the missiles were fired by Iranian-backed Houthi militants, who are engaged in an ongoing conflict in Yemen. Approximately 2-3 missiles were intercepted, according to the second official.

Later Thursday Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed that the USS Carney shot down three land attack missiles as well as several drones that were launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen:

“This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense architecture that we built in the Middle East and that we are prepared to utilize whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interest in this important region”
