This new law to combat a fictional problem is terrible. It allows one to vote with his concealed weapon permit, but not his Texas college ID. Are there any righties on here who have the stones to admit how partisan this is.
I can understand the rush of voter ID laws across this nation. In response to our first minority President, I would expect nothing less from the Republicans than an attempt to keep minority and poor voters at home. I just find it Sad that these defenders of liberty couldn't have masked their intent a little better.
A gun qualifies you. A brain doesn't.

You can make this about race, or partisanship or whatever pleases you.
At the end of the day, you should prove that you are a resident to vote.
Not sure I understand the argument.
Should I be able to go on a cross country voter spree on Nov 2nd? Should we make it easy for voter fraud to take place.
There is already enough fraud going on (IE Florida), why add to the situation?
I had to register to vote when I signed up for selective services at 18, when I moved I had to get a new driver's license and got a new voter card in the process.
What is the big deal?

The elephant in the room here that no one wants to address is the glaring hole that the federal government has when it relates to individual identification. A federally issued identification (other than a passport) provided free of charge at birth would solve this problem, although there are many who would not agree with that solution.

Interesting.
I always thought you were for less governmental intrusion.

Wouldn't this allow them to vote absentee in their home state and also in the state of their school?
Hasn't it been found time and time again that going to college in a state does not make you a resident?
I wish it did, because I had to pay out of state tuition when I stayed on campus. Would love to call and get my multi thousand dollar refund.
Isn't a concealed carry permit given by a county sheriff after he has validated residency?
Isn't the issue stopping fraud?
How is stopping fraud partisan?
It's a blatant attempt to disenfranchise. Why the hell does Minnesota need a new voter ID law. They haven't had a conviction in 22 years for voter fraud, but yet the GOP legislates a new voter ID law. It's pretty obvious what's going on here.

I absolutely am for less govt. intrusion
I also witnessed the stealing of an election in 2000
I also want the voting in my country to be legitimate
Asking to see a voter card, and making people vote in their districts, or send in absentee ballots is not about disenfranchising anyone, it is about institutionalizing practices that lend themselves to fraud.

I really do not know enough about Minnesota to have a huge opinion.
I just think that you should show your damn voter card and an ID. Voting should be taken seriously.
You cant even buy beer or get into a club with a damn student ID, and you want to vote in an American election?
If the standard of Identification is lower than buying beer, or cashing a check, we are fucked.
I also don't think illegals should be allowed to vote, but I may be in the minority on that one.

So, its your argument that there be more government intrusion for a person to vote than buy a handgun?
Interesting.

Is there anyone in this forum that can vote without an ID?
I know I can't.
I've never shown an ID either in Ma, Cal, or NH where I've lived.
There's a lot of things that happen in voting that I don't like. I don't like the id system but what can happen is the finger print id system. You walk up when you register to vote and put your finger on the fingerprint scanner which proves you are you you represent you are. No cost, no ID, no nothing. If you know anything about Pyxis machines (drug dispensing machines in hospitals) nurses use the daily.
They play a game in Massachusetts around election time with regards to absentee ballots. Those who are Republicans get their ballots too late to get them back in time to be official. In the city I grew up there is a state rep under investigation for absentee ballot fraud. Some people (students away at school) said they never received their ballots but ALL were filled out voting for this particular rep.

Last 2 elections (CA) I didn't have to show ID just told them my name.
I don't see why it is such an issue to require a photo ID to vote. I just do not see how it is infringing on anybody's rights.
To me it should have been made mandatory a long time ago.
To some extent I don't think elections really matter anymore anyway. You are essentially voting for the same person regardless of the candidate. I am getting to the point of frustration of just throwing in the towel when it comes to politics. I want to believe we have the power to change our corrupt system but as each day passes the light grows more dim.

so your argument is a state should only require people to prove they are actually legal residents of their voting district if fraud has occurred? i guess that means 21 years ago you where for the law bc 1 year previously fraud occurred. and if fraud were to occur this november, does that mean your whole stance on this issue will be reversed?
i asked in another thread, and ill ask again.
why is it not racists, trying to keep the po' colored folk unlearned, when libraries require IDs to get a library card? principle says if you are against requiring those who you believe are unable to get an ID (just an absolutely laughable argument btw) you should always be against the requirement of ID for govt "services".
ive never been on welfare but i would assume you need to show some sort of ID before you can collect it. now theres a govt program that ONLY affects poor people, yet i dont hear anyone claiming racism on that issue.
hypocrisy at its finest.

The issue is whether one believes that such laws disproportionally impact minorities in violation of the 15th Amendment.
If one believes that, then the response is the 15th Amendment does not protect the right to obtain a library card (although there is likely an equal protection argument).
If one does not believe these laws disproportionally impact minorities, then it doesn't matter because there is no violation.
