House passes Equality Act aimed at ending discrimination
based on sexual orientation and gender identity

(CNN)The House has passed the Equality Act, which would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act
to protect people from being discriminated based on sexual orientation and gender identity in
employment, housing and other services as well as access to public accommodations
such as restaurants.
The final vote was 224-206. Three Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the bill.

The House first passed the Equality Act in 2019, but now its passage comes under Democratic
control with President Joe Biden in the White House and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
announcing Thursday he already intends to bring this legislation to the floor.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. is imposing new sanctions on Russia in response to the poisoning
and continued detention of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and reiterating its call for the
Kremlin critic's release from prison, senior administration officials announced Tuesday.

The U.S. is sanctioning seven senior members of the Russian government and adding
14 parties to the Department of Commerce's "entity list," mirroring sanctions imposed
earlier by the European Union and the United Kingdom for the attempted murder of Nalvany.
The sanctions prevent top figures allied with Russian President Vladimir Putin from
accessing financial assets in the U.S.

Biden administration unveils raft of sanctions on Russia

The actions -- taken in coordination with the European Union, which also unveiled sanctions -
- represent the first significant move against Moscow since Joe Biden became President.
The Treasury Department sanctioned seven senior Russian government officials:
two of President Vladimir Putin's deputy chiefs of staff, two Russian defense ministers,
the Russian prosecutor general, the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the
head of Russia's security services, the FSB. In addition, the State Department sanctioned
the FSB as an entity, a designation that department spokesperson Ned Price said
"speaks to where we believe culpability lies."
