President Joe Biden signed an order on Wednesday blocking the enforced removal of many Hong Kong residents from the United States for 18 months, giving them a “temporary safe haven” from ongoing repression by China in that region, the White House said.

The order will allow Hong Kong residents whose U.S. visas are expired and who are otherwise legally removable to remain in the United States.

Biden on Wednesday also directed the Homeland Security Department to move to allow Hong Kong residents subject to the order to work legally in the United States.

“Given the politically motivated arrests and trials, the silencing of the media, and the diminishing space for elections and democratic opposition, we will continue to take steps in support of people in Hong Kong,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a written statement.

human rights and democracy in the former Soviet state.

Belarus' strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko, nicknamed "Europe's last dictator,"

sanctions since 2006. His regime has sharply cracked down on protesters and
journalists -- the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
found last November that "regarding the allegations related to major human rights
abuses, they were found to be massive and systematic and proven beyond doubt."

500 activists, civil society leaders, and journalists as political prisoners, to

To help reduce virus spread, Biden administration to offer financial assistance to Florida schools that defy governor DeSantis mask mandate ban.  Previously, DeSantis threatens to cut funding to schools that try to protect students.  Florida parents and schools have filed lawsuits against ban on masks.   American pediatric association and Center for disease control recommend masks for schools.
