The interests run much bigger than Financial. Russia has a naval base (Tartus) in Syria along the Mediterranean that is of primary interest. It is their gateway to the Atlantic . Their bases in the North are frozen half the year and worthless from a strategic standpoint.
Russia will not let this base go under any circumstance... and therefore Syria.
Very true, although those bases take on far less importance post 1990 (look at their reduction post-Gorby).
But you do bring up a good point about the military interest.

Golly gee. I am absolutely shocked to see the last two posts from those posters.
I'm interested exactly how Putin has played the US here. They have a much greater interest in Syria than the US, therefore, they have a much greater reason to not want US presence or involvement in the war.
But by all means, I am sure Faux news has a good spin on this, so you should pay close attention to that.

I haven't been watching "faux" news.
I have been watching RT, so that probably has something to do with it. LoL
But, you have to admit, Kerry makes an off the cuff remark, and Russia calls his bluff.
This administration was dead set on a strike. They sent Kerry out to practically beg people for support, and Putin swoops in and offers a chance at peace, and completely takes away what little wind was in the sails of war.
Really, Kerry is probably in the dog house, but this administration as a whole is amateurish.
I am not saying I would make a good Sec of state, or president, but you would have to be blind deaf and dumb not to realize that Putin has forced our hand.

Or...
the strike was always a bluff to force Russian action.
You don't know and neither do I.

Why would this administration purposefully lose that much political capital domestically and internationally on some sort of hail marry?
You are suggesting that they planted the question and Kerry's off the cuff remark was somehow staged?
The inconsistency of Kerry's message from the get-go and inconsistency of Obama vs. the overall agenda will leave a legacy of ineptitude that will trump Carter's.
It is possible that this was all a masterstroke by Obama, but not very plausible.
It is a huge stretch, and it is very telling that you are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, on this huge stretch.

What political capital?
Threaten bombing and back that up by going to Congress (as opposed to doing it without Congressional approval which many Presidents have done).
Notice how I didn't give any benefit of the doubt (the "you don't know and neither do I statement') whereas you are "certain" of ineptitude.
As I said the other day..if this matter was resolved by Russia becoming the supervisor of the weapons and without any US bombs, loss of life, drone attacks, etc. and Rand Paul was President, you would be giddy beyond belief.
Your dark red is showing.

More attacks on fellow cover members dj? Seems to be your new MO.
Why not try relaxing a bit Francis?
I asked if anyone else had any suspicions about Putin playing us.
I am very leery of Putin, his intentions and the end game in all of this.
Is that a partisan question in your mind?
I suppose you missed my posts that stated that if Kerrys off the cuff comment brought this about then kudos to him if it was indeed the catalyst.

Actually, there were zero attacks in my post. Calling me a liberal or partisan may be untrue but it isn't an attack.
Calling you a right winger is exactly the same.

DJ,
Any political capital barry had, anywhere. If you can't see the bungling taking place over the Syria situation, you are just too far in the bag for this guy.

What political capital?
Having to make an all out blitz to try and win congressional support for bombing Syria which often means having to offer deals/favors on other pending legislation or giving up something in return for a yes vote.
You know this.............................

Right wingers are funny creatures.
If a Republican was President and he/she was able to negotiate a resolution whereby Russia did all of the work for the US/UN, they would be calling it the greatest diplomatic victory since the end of the Cold War!

that is a tone deaf statement.
It is not taking into account anything that precipitated the action.
I am happy we are not going to war, and Russia was able to use diplomacy to avert a possible world war, not Obama. Obama can not go to war now because he is hamstrung by the people of this country, No support from the limeys, Russian Diplomacy and the fact that his plan included supporting Al Qaeda.
Stop carrying this man's water, you are embarrassing yourself.

Speaker Boehner hit the nail on the head yesterday when he released a web video contrasting the White House’s willingness to work with the Russians to find a diplomatic solution in Syria against President Obama’s declaration that he won’t negotiate with Republicans over the debt limit.

umm, yeah I trust Putin and Assad to be most forth coming and honest.......
I have said if Kerrys off the cuff statement brought about the Russian connection then good for him.
What I find laughable is that people actually think this is going to be some smooth process with the OPCW/UN/Russians/Syria removing and destroying all the chemical weapons in the middle of a civil war. We dont even know how many they have besides a guesstimate. Add to that the fact that Assad has already dicked the UN inspectors before. Also, I highly doubt Assad wont rope a dope just like Huessin did but I guess time will tell and for now the Syrian children Obama was so concerned about are getting slaughtered by conventional weapons which I guess he is ok with as long as he saved face with his red line comment.
Obama foreign policy is a freakin train wreck and oh how I wish I could just look away!

This might be the most important part of the debate ; Russia is willing to protect their interests in Syria far greater than what U.S. might want to provoke (i.e. attack) on Assad.
