Mayor Ted Wheeler was tear gassed in downtown Portland early
Thursday morning, according to video and posts on Twitter from
a New York Times journalist.
The video shows Wheeler, in distress as a cloud of tear gas drifts by him.
"It stings. It's hard to breathe. I can tell you with 100% honesty
I saw nothing that provoked this response," 
Wheeler said to the Times camera. "I'm not afraid but I am pissed off."

The video appeared to come after Wheeler joined crowds to listen
to protesters and answer their questions in response to violent
clashes between demonstrators and federal forces, whose camouflage,
troop-like uniforms and aggressive tactics have exacerbated the protests.

They are guarding a vacant building courthouse is closed due to covid.

conference on Tuesday.

The admission became the first in a series of remarkable about-faces
this week for a President ordinarily loath to course correct. After
spending the last month in denial about the worst health crisis in
a century and downplaying a surge in coronavirus cases by falsely
claiming it was artificially juiced by increased testing, Trump this
week -- prodded by aides and sinking poll numbers -- has tried to
show Americans he is taking the pandemic seriously.

President Trump seemed to be in full retreat on key coronavirus topics -
- from the efficacy of mask-wearing to the risks of holding the GOP
convention in Florida. The one exception was school reopenings,
which he has insisted must happen in person this fall.
Of all the mind-bending coronavirus decisions that Trump has made,
the political risks of his back-to-school gamble are perhaps the greatest.
At a time when he is struggling with shrinking support among women,
moderates and seniors, he is urging parents to send their children back
into the classroom even though much is still unknown about the
long-term risks to their health and how rapidly they could spread it to
vulnerable adults, including grandparents and teachers.

blame-game tactics against the states, saying coronavirus
testing problems and rising cases are not his fault as they
try to counter new polls suggesting that his leadership 
failings could cost him reelection.

The new administration drive to absolve Trump of
responsibility and to speed up economic activity by
encouraging people to go back to work follow the
President's previously misjudged gamble to goad states
that are now suffering terribly from the pandemic to open

Now, with Senate Republicans releasing their proposal -
- the HEALS Act -- on Monday afternoon, it's clear that
President Donald Trump, who has long touted his own
negotiation skills, has already made major concessions,
including sacrificing his payroll tax cut and agreeing to
additional billions for coronavirus testing.
As these negotiations continue, millions of Americans
are suffering from both the economic and health toll of
the pandemic. And despite splits within the party,
Republicans are keenly aware that their prospects for
holding onto power are diminishing each day.

There are a lot of awful Republican governors in this country,
with only a handful (in Maryland and Massachusetts) taking
the coronavirus pandemic seriously from the start. But most
have been forced to reverse course in the face of this new
wave of infections, even in places like Arizona and Texas,
with the Trumpiest governors.

Yet two states stand out in their continued refusal
 to acknowledge the dangers of the pandemic.
