Mormons are encouraged to pay 10% of all earnings to the church every year based on the principle that God gave you the ability to earn the money.
Mormons also are encouraged to skip two meals once per month (Usually breakfast and lunch) and donate at least the money you saved to a fund called 'Fast offerings'. That money is pooled together to help out the less fortunate people in your immediate area that attend church at the same time/place as you do with rent/mortgage, utility bills, etc.
