People fundamentally misunderstand charity versus tithing. There is certainly a difference. Charity is freely given out of goodwill and a good heart; it is an act of conscience. 
Tithing is usually mandatory, to a certain degree dependent on which institution is involved. Tithing can also stem from goodwill, but does not have to be necessarily so; it is more or less enacted as a requirement for continued participation and good standing within the religious institution.

The way I understand it, a 10% tithe is required under Mormon(LDS) principles in order to receive the temple blessing. The majority of tithing funds are used to construct and maintain LDS facilities, provide LDS education, offer social welfare for LDS members in need, or assist LDS endorsed causes. 
LDS has assets of 30+ billion with 6-7 billion in annual(mainly tithing) revenue.


Tithing is in no way a replacement for paying taxes. It is not a substitute. Neither is charity. Therefore, Romney is disingenuous(and rather insulting)to present it as such when stating "and if you add in addition the amount the goes to charity [at the Mormon church], well, the number gets well above 20 percent." Huh? His LDS tithe goes to only LDS specific efforts, not to the common good.

In contrast, taxes are obtained by the government for the collective common good and certainly tithing to the LDS does not fall into that category. We all use roads, have access to fire departments, police services, enjoy clean water etc...the LDS contributes to none of that. 

To quote David Simon:
"Government is government. Charity is charity. The former is required of all of us, in proportion to our earnings, if this is going to remain a republic. It is a fundamental responsibility of citizenship. The latter is honorable, voluntary and humane behavior that is between an individual and conscience."



It is certainly fair to ask all of us to contribute taxes in proportion to our earnings. Is this not fundamental to the functioning of our Republic? Romney appears not to be doing so, with his refusal to reveal his tax records and his use of offshore accounts and loopholes not available to most of us. He should be questioning why so many of the wealthy pay less in proportion, compared to the vast majority of the middle class, to keep our system functional. Instead, he touts his 13.9% rate (with his tithe as additional "tax"), as a badge of honor. Look at me, I pay my fair share. Shameless.

Your personal opinion on the matter is well worthless. I'll bet Romney paid hundreds of times more tax than you did. Did he use more services? Put more wear and tear on the roads? Nope, he subsidized you.

Let's talk about obama's failed economy......................

The actual paid amount of taxes is not cogent to the discussion. Whether I paid $100,000 or $100 in taxes is simply not relevant. Proportionality is the essence of the argument. Our Republic falls apart if we do not have this in place. We currently have extremes at both ends of the income scale, the top 0.1% and the bottom quintile, who certainly could be paying more for the collective good, in proportion to their earnings.

Federal spending certainly needs to be controlled and/or reduced, but our tax code also needs to be made more proportional, especially at the extremes.

Does he break any laws by deducting what he gives to his church whether the church requires it or not? NO NO NO
bunch of cry babies around here.
And the 13.9% he paid in taxes adds up to alot more in revenue than 12 people who make less and pay a higher rate bc his rate is based on capital gains.
Too many ppl watching MSNBC I think

One small correction mellow, the welfare system is open to non members as well if they ask for help.

Does that change anything to help the tithe come closer to a charity? Church buildings are often used as refuge in disasters as well.

He needs 270, right?  Explain to me how he's going to get near that number while losing CA and FL and also struggling to gain ground in eleven swing states (I think it's eleven?).  He's gonna get killed, electorate-wise.  Popular vote-wise?  Who cares.

What have you been smoking or snorting for the pass 18 months?...lol

Look as an independent if obama was doing well...meaning the economy was vibrant, the deficit was being paid down, unemployment was at a low level and not high as it is now then for sure he would have my vote this nov.

But as things stand currently, any honest person can clearly see he has failed miserably and because I haven't been smoking or snorting anything like you for the past 18 months my head is clear in making a rational decision.

My decision is based on performance and so because obama hasn't performed satisfactorily he doesn't deserve a 2nd term.

When you perform satisfactorily you get rewarded but when you perform poorly you get rejected...it is as simple as that.

Lastly I want to say...are you better off now than you were three and a half years ago? If not, vote for my 2 guys below, I thank you and the country will thank you if you do.

Romney and Ryan in 012!

And why shouldn't he get killed?  Obama's campaign has out thought him every step of the way.  I'm not voting for Obama, but this is twice now where Obama has pulled off a mind-blowingly superior campaign to his opposition.  Romney's gonna get killed.  He didn't even have the customary raise in the polls after he announced his running mate (4% right, he went up just 2%?).  Then he goes and adds Paul Ryan to the ticket, who isn't helping is case at all.  He only appeals to the far right, who's support Romney already had!  Makes no sense.  Loser ticket all the way.

Your statement is completely untrue.

The Ryan pick has moved WI to "toss up" and in a poll released this week Romney is ahead in Michigan.

I'm not clear which polls you are referring to.

Finally, the Obama campaign has spent $120 million to be down 2 in the Gallup tracking poll.
Obama is spending more than he's taking in.

If that is "out thinking" Romney, then words have no meaning.

Great, he's got a 10 point edge with a tiny minority of people, half of whom won't vote. You're right about Florida.  That's not certain yet.  I guess we'll see come November, but my official stance is that Obama comes close to 400, perhaps surpassing it.

I'm not going by the polls - things are too far out for them to matter.  MI will stay a toss up to the end.  Ryan has hurt his ticket.  As I said, he barely registered the customary increase after bringing him on (half the average increase).  Obama will need to sleep with his daughter for Romney to win this election.
