New York (CNN Business) The economy is once again teetering on
the edge of a so-called fiscal cliff. Investors don't seem to care.

The 2020 fiscal cliff is different. More fiscal stimulus is almost
certainly coming soon from Washington.

Economists are currently predicting a 35% annualized
contraction in the US economy for the second quarter.
That data will be released Thursday.
The hope is that will be the worst quarter of this
coronavirus-induced recession. But what if it isn't?
Millions of people remain out of work and there are
growing calls to provide new stimulus checks for
even more low-income Americans.

Child hospitalizations from Covid-19
surge 23% in Florida
as schools statewide must reopen

Just weeks before schools must open across Florida, the
numbers of new cases and hospitalizations due to Covid-19 have surged.
On July 16, the state had a total of 23,170 children ages 17 and under
who had tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, according
to the Florida Department of Health. By July 24, that number jumped
to 31,150.
That's a 34% increase in new cases among children in eight days.
And more children in Florida are requiring hospitalization.
As of July 16, 246 children had been hospitalized with coronavirus.
By July 24, that number had jumped to 303.
That's a 23% increase in child Covid-19 hospitalizations in eight days.

During that same time period, the death toll among
children in Florida went from 4 to 5.

MGM Resorts says 'large majority' of employees
in the entertainment, sports division will be fired

Shares of MGM Resorts were falling over 6% in afternoon trading
Monday after Las Vegas casinos notified their staff that if they
weren't recalled from furlough by August 31, they would
subsequently be fired.

MGM told its employees that it had originally hoped the casino
closures would be brief and full operations could be restored.
But the pandemic has progressed, and based on currently
available data, it doesn't look like "it will be safe to restart
shows prior to August 31, 2020."

That means the "large majority" of employees in the
entertainment and sports division will be fired on that date.

Health benefits will also be terminated on that date, though
employees who are let go will be able to still apply for
emergency grants from the casino through Nov. 29, 2020.

Shares of Las Vegas Sands, MGM, and Wynn were all down
today, though MGM was hardest hit.

New York (CNN Business) The US economy is emerging from
what experts think will be its worst quarter on record.
Although that's behind us now and conditions have improved
since the country ground to a halt in April, the recovery remains
fragile and could ultimately disappoint hopeful economists.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis will report just how bad the
second quarter was on Thursday, in its first estimate of GDP,
the broadest measure of the economy.

Economists polled by Refinitiv expect an annualized decline
of 34.1% between April and June. That would be the worst
quarter since the BEA began keeping quarterly records in 1947.

It would also be more than four times worse than 
the decline during the 2007-09 financial crisis.
