When I was 18 and recently married with child on the way I applied for one of 3 jobs with a city. It required taking an mechanical apptiude test. There were 114 applicants. I went to the local library and took out every appitude test study guide they had and I studied. When I arrived they split us up in various rooms due to the number of applicants. I sat down next to a guy with a civil engineering degree. That had me really worried. So I took the test, felt good about it. A few months later I still heard nothing. Went down to City Hall HR and asked. You finished 4th Mr UNIMAN but three minorities were given preference, were interviewed and given the jobs. I was not even interviewed. Also had apps at GM. Six months after the city test GM calls me, interviews me and sends me to a physical. At the same time the city calls me, two of the three quit, and they too interviewed me. I took both physicals on the same day. GM's was everything! The city was cough and tap on your knee reflex. The oil embargo was going on and Japan was pushing the american auto industry. I took the lesser paying, better pension city job. GM layed off 3000 in my town three months later, I never would have made it there. My father helped guide me then, a great move.
Eight years later Governor Blanchard of Michigan announces they will hire over 100 new conservation officers as funding was approved. As an avid outdoorsmen I was drawn to it. Again, a state apptitude test and again I studied. The test emcompasses Conservation Officer, State Trooper, and Weigh Master positions. And again I felt I did very well. After eight months heard nothing. Duck hunting one October day I was inspected by two conservation officers. I asked them what ever happened to all those positions? I applied and thought I did well. HA-HA-HA was their reply, your a white male, you have to score at least 97% to be comsidered, all they want is minorities and females who score 70% or better. So in this case it's hearsay without diffinate proof. Then a few months later the state police called me for an interview, I declined, not the job I wanted.
10 years after I was hired by the city; Two supervisor openings. I apply. There is one guy with more senority, more education, and basically a never called in sick dedicated employee. OK, he has me beat, but there are two openings. No test, just interview. Sure enough he gets the first. A week later a minority who had quit the city to become a state trooper and then dropped out of the police academy and was working part-time again with the city got the job. This guy had little if any experience at our facility, had far less education in our field too. And he was a good friend of mine outside of work. People told me I should sue. The plant managers secretary slipped me a copy of an inter-department form showing the plant manager selected me, the division head selected me, and the city mangers affirmative action director said no, not enough minorities and ovrrrode the decision. I didn't complain and asked to be put on the new supervisors shift to help get him up to speed, he was my friend. Another county had a facility that saw I was passed by and offered me a supervisor job there even though I had no experience there. They had problems and needed good people. I took that new job in 1988, remember the pay was 10 bucks an hour. Still have the offer.
So yes Deezy it really happened. And at the time I understood even though it hurt me. But here we are 2023 and we're no better.

@StumpTownStu https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/video/tennessee-state-democrat-rep-justin-154452834.html Stu, I will get right to the point. I was taught and learned about Harriett Tubman in high school in the 1970's. And I do not see anyone opposing African American History. I grew up in a diverse community, went to diverse schools. When I graduated and entered the job market three times affirmative action held me back because I was and am a white male. Never got mad about, kinda understood, yet the same kids who had the same opportunities in the same classes in school were now given favortism.
OK. I laugh when I hear or read statements like this because I 100% know it's a complete lie. "Three times affirmative action held me back because I was am am a white male." Sure it did buddy. How do you know this? The companies you applied for told you that you did not get the job because you are white?? Sorry we had to go with the black guy. No reputable business or hiring personnel would ever tell a viable candidate or anyone this. How did you even know you were passed up three times for a minority candidate? Who informed you of this? How do you know someone else wasn't hired because of more experience or better qualifications. I know this is BS, especially because of the source. Nice effort to avoid coming off sounding racist but the entire post failed in that aspect.

Congrats on going 16-5 in college basketball. Your average juice was about -182 and one unit bets would have yielded 10.15 units won in your 16 wins. Minus the 5 loses would put your posted plays at +5.15 units. Nice job!

And I finished 4th on the test overall. Minorities were not placed above me on the test, rather they could score much lower and be given preference. They told me affirmative action chose minority candidates. So many others I am sure were passed due to being white males.
That was standard operating procedure back then.
Also standard op was interviewing at least three people per position. So there should have been at least 9-10 interviews. Finished 4th and no interview until two quit.

Sure. I do not care how you attempt to justify your posts. I know your stories are not true. Doesn't even sound like you know what affirmative action is.
"Affirmative action chose minority candidates" What does this even mean? Affirmative action is not a person or a computer program. Your entire post is BS.
The so called HR told you how all of the minorities scored on the test? You must have had quite a relationship with the HR manager to get all of this information at 18 years old. Surprised you couldn't secure the job instead of those blacks with your special access.
Sure buddy. Carry on with your nonsense.

Whatever dude, you know I told Midnight this awhile back here on Covers.
And NO, I could not see anybody else's score. And "Affirmative Action" was a City Department.
" Affirmative action chose minority candidates" What does this even mean? "
It means a department in the city called the Affirmative Action Dept. reviewed the positions and the current racial makeup within the city in those positions and determined that they were under represented, therefore minority candidates will given preference as long as they had scored at least the minimum passing grade. I believe 70%.
So I was passed up because of my race and gender.

Affirmative action are policies not departments. How the hell did you know the hiring criteria for minority candidates and what percentage minority candidates needed versus white candidates? This would not have been legal as it is discrimination. Secondly, had you known this so called department would not allow you to get the job since you are white and male, why would you even apply? I mean you had no chance right?
Everyone in here knows your fictitious story is a load of BS.

The city of Flint, Michigan, adopted a plan in 1985 requiring that 50% of all police officers who are promoted to the rank of sergeant be members of specified "minority" groups. This action under 42 U.S.C. §(s) 1983 and 1981 was brought by white police officers who have been passed over at least once for promotion because the plan required that minorities be promoted ahead of them to maintain the designated numerical balance
I suggest you educate yourself.

Let's see, if I have half a brain I could Google "Affirmative Action Department"

@UNIMAN
Do you even read what you post? Talk about uneducated.
It appears you did not try Googling "Affirmative Action Department" because such departments do not show up because they do not exist.
Affirmative action is a policy, a plan, a proposal not a hiring department.
You got caught in a lie. I asked you what city you were discriminated against for being a white male by an "Affirmative Action Department". You do not provide me with an answer and then find me some random case pertaining to a police department in Flint, Michigan from 1985. Followed by several other historical cases about hiring policies in police departments, which are obviously in cities you are not from and unrelated to your hiring experience at 18.
This further proves you are full of $hit and your entire story is fabricated to advance your BS narrative that you were wronged for being a white male.
Again, what city did this happen to you in? Why can't you provide me with a link to the Affirmative Action Department in your city during those years??? Hmmm. I wonder why. My guess is because it does not exist. No need to attach affirmative action court case links again because that is not what I asked for.

I asked you what city this so called "Affirmative Action Department" existed in and what year. That is not your "personal information" What in the heck are you talking about?
Now you are just tying to make up any excuse for not providing it because you know it does not and never existed. You were caught in a lie. Of course you cannot post the link because you simply made up your entire story.
How about this? Provide a link to any "Affirmative Action Department" in any city services, city or local government in any city in the U.S. from 60s, 70s, 80s, or currently? This way you can remain a mystery, even though no one here cares about you.
