I ran across this earlier, for what is worth;
Giants at Redskins
12/21/09
The Cowboys win over the Saints on Saturday Night made things even more desperate for the New York Giants. The Giants needed the Saints and 49ers to win this week and neither happened. So the noose is now tightening. Things don't get any easier for the Giants either as they still have to face the Panthers, a team that has always been a thorn in their sides, and the Vikings to end the year. So, Giants fans, things don't look good.
But first things first. There's no hope if the Giants don't sweep their final 3 games and that all starts tonight in the Nations Capital as they face the once hapless Redskins. We say "once" hapless because the Skins at one point this season were, well, pathetic. No offense to speak of, and arguably one of the NFL's worst teams.
To their credit, they didn't roll over and die. No, they didn't start winning, but they played some very competitive ball against some very good teams. They beat the Broncos, then lost by one to the Cowboys and by a field goal to both the Eagles and Saints. In their last three games they have seemingly found an offense that's been absent all season. They managed to score 24, 30 and 34 in their last 3 games and only one of those teams was a dud, the Raiders. That alone, will make this one interesting as the Giants have give up an average of 32 points per game over their last 8 games after having started the season 5-0 and ranking among the best defenses in the league.
We caution our readers regularly about games like this. It's often tempting to back teams that need to win in order to stay alive, especially against what may appear to be a weaker opponent who's season was lost long ago. But backing these do or die teams has been a losing proposition over the years. The Skins are dangerous here. Jobs are on the line. Pride is on the line.
The Giants simply don't deserve to make the playoffs. They have played some lousy football over the 2nd half of the season, going 2-6 over their last 8 games and fielding a defense that seemingly can't stop anyone. A defense which also happens to be banged up (Cornerback Corey Webster - out).
We don't have a strong opinion on this game, but the Giants are no playoff team and are certainly ripe for a loss. Were going to side with the Skins here to put another nail in the Giants Coughlin, uh, we mean coffin, and beat the Giants straight up here tonight. No strong opinion on the total either but we'd lean towards the under as we expect a healthy dose of Brandon Jacobs tonight.
