Monday finds 2 Key Horses running for us:

Dancing for Glory - SAR ( 5) GP 12/14/12 # 5
Starsilhouette - SAR (10) GP 12/01/12 # 8

Dancing for Glory showed some promise on a rock hard Gulfstream Park turf back in December, then appeared to be ready to take her first allowance race when she went to the shelf in March. Not an unusual event for young and developing horses at all. Chad Brown now beings her back in an interesting spot: a Starter Optional Claiming event at the Spa. It is one of the wrinkles added by P.J. Campo and the NYRA and fuses several types of races together. In this case, if you have not started for a claiming price of 65K or less, you are up for the claim (75K). If you have, you are protected. Thus, a trainer can choose to risk better stock and try to steal a win against claiming types. Interestingly enough, the field may be a bit tough as 6 of the 9 entrants (excluding the MTO entry) are up for the claim!

Looks like a topsy turvy allowance race to me! Here, this lady comes off the shelf, has been training downstate (presumably away from prying eyes...but not spies), and ships up for the 75K tag. Will anyone take her? Is she damaged goods? There was some promise there and still may be, but the layoff is an issue. Watch carefully for the future.

Starsilhouette needs no intro to Slew watchers. She was a star last year for us at 4 different tracks. This daughter of Orientate owned by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Michael Maker looks to return to form as the 6-5 ML fav. If she wins, it will be the longest price you will get for a long time.

I will also note here that this will be my final post on this forum. I think I made my position perfectly clear in my last post and see no need to reiterate it here. I'm not one to tolerate nonsense. Not too many winners from Slew today but I personally wish to thank Alan E. Goldberg for scratching Laughing out of the Matchmaker and running in the Diana. I wonder if he knew Dayatthespa intended to scratch?

For Sunday, we have two Key Horses running:

Channel Lady - MP ( 5) GP 01/05/13 # 10
Decisive Moment - MP (12) GP 02/01/13 # 5

Channel Lady (English Channel - Queen Supreme, by King of Kings (IRE)) was last seen on 6/22 winning the Edward P. Evans All Along Stakes - Gr. 3 at Colonial Downs. Todd Pletcher calls on main man Johnny V. to guide this daughter of English Channel to her second straight win. Notably, it would make her 6 for 11 lifetime. Mr. Pletcher has been very careful in spotting her after he had to drop her into the maiden claiming ranks to get her maiden breaker. That was followed by 5 excellent races capped by a win in the Suwannee River Stakes - Gr. 3 at Gulfstream Park...the race that followed the 100K Marshua's River Stakes (G3) which got her on our list. Regardless of what you might think of him, if he was the CEO of a big company...I'd buy the stock.

She will benefit from the scratch of Laughing but will have to contend with Michael Matz's Manakshi (Fr) and Graham Motion's Julie's Love (GB). Regardless, I still like Pletcher's judgement.

Decisive Moment should help set an honest pace in the Oceanport but hasn't won a race since Nixon was in the white house. Whether Republican, Democrat or Independent...

...use at your own risk.

I also wish to take a moment and address a question I was asked the other day: "What exactly are Key Horses"? They are not horses picked by Slew, but selected by me...the human. In reviewing key races, I select certain horses for future bets. They may stay on the list for a long time and need to be handicapped each time very carefully. But I have had some horses on my personal list for years and still catch them in winning races. So I share them with you, but you have to decide if this race is THE race.

Now I considered not posting this Key Horse today because she has not panned out at all. She has run in 3 allowance races after breaking her maiden with the comments being that she was empty in the lane. So why then is she here?

One would think that Shug might shorten her up just a bit. But Nooooooo....he adds distance for this Allowance Optional Claiming affair on the turf as this one is 1 3/16th miles. He also changes riders to Javiar Castellano who has quietly ranked himself a close 2nd in earnings this year behind Mr. All Planet Joel Rosario, who, in case you were napping, won some very big races.

Shug has worked her slow and is most likely looking for a slower pace and a different kind of ride this time, so we'll defer to Shug and post her again. She is tagged with a 5-1 ML.

I have not seen the PP's and I'm not going to look. You decide.

As you probably know, Sunday was a huge day for Slew watchers with Key Horse Let It Rock paying $37 at Gulfstream Park.

At Monmouth, Themanmythnlegend paid $50 and In the Building paid $22. And as they were back to back, the double paid $397.

I noted the other day on a different forum and will note here as well that a huge congratulations goes out to a long time Slew watcher who hit everything there was to hit on these three horses and came home with about 10K in winnings. Yes, that is ten thousand. Dollars.

A great example of taking a leap of faith on long prices, as well as performing some sharp handicapping around them. And it really did not take a large investment at all. I believe the largest bet percentage wise, was a $5 cold tri with Let It Rock on top and the correct two horses underneath. That by itself was worth $3500. Nice! Add to that pick 3's, exactas, doubles and 1 super and...BINGO!

And until I got the email...I was under the impression that I had a good day!

Go figure.

Once again a full plate with 11 single entries listed and an interesting 4 out of 7 races at Monmouth Park with only 2 runners. If one hits like it did today (race 11 exacta paid $133.00) you got $$$ in your pocket. And as I noted yesterday, if you thought underneath today, you did very well. For example, if you used the 3 Slew listings in the Eddie Read underneath the logical Jeranimo you got yourself a $130 exacta. There were a whole bunch like that today. My favorite play using Slew horses.

We also had a beautiful $100+ double with back to back singles in the 5th and 6th at Gulfstream.

For Sunday, we have two long shots running as Key Horses:

Let It Rock - GP ( 7) 12/08/12 # 7
Wasted At Midnight - DMR ( 2) DMR 08/05/12 # 6

Let It Rock last won at Tampa in Feb. and is one of two that are out of conditions and in for the 25K tag in this Allowance Optional Claiming contest at Gulfstream Park at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Less than stellar competition may help this 12-1 ML entry here. Your call.

Wasted At Midnight caught my eye when finishing 5th in a MSW last August at Del Mar. Next entered in the Gr. I Del Mar Debutante Stakes where she finished last of 8 when she wasted her energies early. Alexis Barba put this gal on the shelf for 11 months, and she returns here in a MSW. Nakatani rides and if you don't bet her, watch her closely.

Notice the long list of races for Saratoga. Lots and lots of fast horses run there. Be cautious because many of those "fast" horses ran fast in their last race or two but may have run themselves out. The singles on Slew's list are late in the card so take a look at them first. And don't forget the other tracks, where the competition isn't as keen, but the money is just as green.

I like that.

Wave Theory comes full circle to where I first saw her. Not a win machine but getting better and with the hottest jockey in the entire Milky Way jumping aboard...she may be an interesting play. And with a state bred MSW on either side...pick your long shot double.

Hello All! For Wednesday July 17th, welcome Del Mar!

Seven races to work with at Del Mar on opening day including 3 horses in the 2nd division of the Oceanside Stakes that will try and beat Mr. Bafferts entry of Den's Legacy (7-2 ML). And while the master trainer has been successful at amassing a bankroll for Den's account of 400K on only 2 wins, the horse is beaten over and over.

We'll attempt to get him with Rosengold (9-2 ML) who will try to wire the field and is fast enough to do it. 4 for 5 lifetime and running for the quietly winning at 24% Julio Canini, this grandson of Stormy Atlantic...I favor him greatly as a sire...will give this guy a run for his money. I am always ticked off when Baffert beats me out on the left coast because it often just seems futile to bet against him. I do it anyway.

The two others in this race on Slew's list are Gabriel Charles (5-1 ML) and Joelito (5-1 ML). I will use them along with Rosengold in a double with In a Wine Tizzy (9-2 ML) in the 10th. While this one is a chronic loser...and I usually ignore the chronic losers in maiden races...this drop from MSW to 20K claiming might be the tonic needed to get that first...and maybe only win.

That is, unless the AE Wildcat Candy gets in. Then...I'll think about it. You can grab the file off the site and look at all the horses listed...and decide for yourself. No serious plays for me these days...I'm saving them for the Spa.

Whatever and however you play, enjoy opening day at Del Mar. I'm happy to have the day off and will do the next best thing to being there.

Of course, it is closing day at Belmont and Hollywood Park, as Hollywood's spring meet is about to become extinct.

Some good races today with Slew nailing a few nice winners, and as noted in yesterday's post, Rahystrada indeed caught the eye by becoming the only 3-peat winner of the Arlington Handicap in it's history. If you did what you were told and grabbed the race file from the website, you would have also had the winner of the next race (11) at Arlington in Pataky Kid who paid $15.40 as well as the double paying a very nice $59.80.

But you most likely didn't listen. No doubt your mom is shaking her head. Still.

I must also note that a glitch in Slew's brain cells caused two Key Horses not to be listed: Noble Tune and Lily the Pink. Lily did win at Arlington and paid $11.00. If you recalled her being a Key Horse at Keeneland...and nailed her on that basis...good for you.

And for the Woodbine players, the two top horses in the two listed races both won with payoffs of $20.40 (Courtville) and $8.10 (Laughing Falcon).

Our Little Daisy - AP ( 5) AP 06/19/13 # 7

Our Little Daisy became a Key Horse because of my one eyed cat named Daisy. I could not resist the temptation to play her at Arlington last month in a maiden claiming race I had absolutely no interest in, or had any business playing in the first place. But at 10-1 and with a name like that, she was worth a small $20 win bet. She appeared hopelessly mired in mid-pack but then kicked out nicely. As the trackman commented: "shifted4w,reeled in foe". Which is trackman code for "she sprung an afterburner and won going away by almost two lengths in a 5 furlong sprint".

I just had to put her on my Key Horse list and she shows up for her 2nd start in a starter allowance with a 12-1 ML tag. She looked very professional in her debut win, albeit against maiden claimers of the 25K variety. But she qualifies for this protected starter allowance race for claimers starting for 30K or less and I will have to place a bet. I have not seen the PP's yet so I cannot tell you if I think she will be competitive but I will make a small play anyway.

And just for the record, my one eyed Daisy is immortalized on Slew's face book page...in case you think I jest.

A big day at Arlington with 4 Grade 3 races: the Stars and Stripes Stakes, Modesty Handicap, American Derby and Arlington Handicap. We have had a few at Arlington of late including the long shot I pointed out yesterday in the Arlington 10th race. Fortunately, he won and paid $17.60, slightly underlaid from his ML odds. Unfortunately, Arlington only ran 9 races yesterday but if you can count better than I can...you had him!

A few that Slew says are ones to look at are Sancerre in the 6th and Colonial Flag in the 8th. Both are singles on Slews list. Sancerre, running in an allowance has run well in his last 3 starts winning 2 of 3. He is a local boy tagged at 5-1 on the ML. Colonial Flag runs for Michael Matz and is 2nd off the layoff having hit the show spot in her last 2 races, the Gr. 3 Mint Julip and the Gr. 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes, both run at Churchill Downs. Tagged at 5-2 on the ML, she has Joe Rocco, Jr. back in the irons.

In the Gr. III Arlington Handicap, Rahystrada catches the eye. He has won this race twice and is back for a 3rd try, this time with Rosie Napravnik in the saddle.

One other that is worth mentioning is Noble Tune. He did not show up as a Key Horse but should have. Running in the 7th at Belmont, the Solar Splendor Stakes, he will have to duke it out with Balance the Books but should be able to get it done if the turf isn't wet.
