There is a place about 3.5 hours from my house in Phoenix. On the Sea of Cortez (now called the Gulf of California because Cortez was a bad man so we have to re-name this body of water blah blah blah - dude anyone who made history made it because they were both good and bad get over it). Its beautiful. Cheap. Very relaxing. My wife and I go all the time. They literally just opened a new casino with a sports book. The lines are way way way off half the time. Like too high or way late on line movement. I put this bet in as a tester to see what I can get away with and can't. But gotta win first to see if they even honor it when I go in to cash it. The cartel is here. But like the Mafia they are not looking for trouble. They rather lay low and make their money. But you go looking for trouble it will find you make no mistake.

It really is nice if you like Mexico. I mean you need to bring in your own water or buy bottled water. You have to marginally know the language. You have to understand Mexican beef isn't American beef. You have to bet aware of your surroundings. None of this bothers me in the least. But to some people I have brought down there they act like it is such an inconvenience. Its sad literally one of the most beautiful places on this planet and a little inconvenience bothers you that much. Oh well. More for me I guess.

Mexico is among the most beautiful countries in this world , if not for this insane drug demand here in the US it would be a paradise 

been to Cabo San Lucas , Tijuana (back in the 90s) , and took a trip with some friends for the weekend down to Ensenada , best food , beer , tequila for 10 persons , $ 100

All great places. Many people don't know that Ensenada is also a hot bed for wonderful wines and due to the fact there is no smog or very little city lights the stars in the sky are out of this world at night. I love Ensenada too. Cabo is Cabo. It's a little too developed for my liking at this time. Rather go to Puerto Penasco (where is I do go), Tulum, or even Playa Del Carmen. Tijuana is, always has been and always will be a shit hole. It were Californian's get their seedy rocks off without big brother watch. It is 1000x more dangerous than any other Mexican town I have ever been to. Mazatlán is quite nice too. El Capo had a strangle hold on that town for a while but no longer. I agree with you about the drugs. Sad very sad. 

 good friend wants to visit family in Sinaloa this summer and asked me if i want to join him , haven't answered yet

 Man Barcelona was like that. We had 4 of us and we would eat until we couldn't,  and drink Rose' for hours and the bill would be like 50 euros. No tax or tip too of course.

honestly ,living in Los Angeles ,i think that 90% of places in Mexico are safer than it is here
