thanks for the insightful post and for making us soccer loving americans look bad
Sorry- Not trying to do that. Just making some points. I have to think most everyone hates watching these guys flop around like this but if you like that , cheers mate, have another Guiness and watch the fish flop all you want. I have a dime on the game and a one goal lead, why do I have to wait until the 90 minutes are gone to see if the game is really over. Why? Will there be 1 more minute, 6 how many? Then when will the game be over? Ridiculous!!! I am all ears. People bash this thread but offer no solutions to these obvious questions. Not one yet.

I am ok with these games ending in ties but what about the championship, are they really going to determine a European champion on a shootout? Really? Is that the rule? Is the world cup the same. Does this seem silly to anyone else? Why not some OT boys, cmon. Talk about the joy of a goal, can you just imagine your country getting the sudden death goal to win the whole she-bang!
In the knockout stages, if the scores are level at the end of 90 mins, two 15 minute halves take place. If the scores are still level, then it goes to a penalty shoot-out. It would be unreasonable to have anymore time than this as the players are so tired from their constant running throughout the match. Everyone loves the supense of a penalty shoot-out, although it can be heartbreaking.

I love soccer but have to admit the offside rule needs to be addressed. It slows the game down and prevents free flowing soccer. The linesman blow so many offside calls, it's ridiculous. I realize it's difficult for the linesman when he has to watch where the player is when the ball is played to him.
The solution to opening up the game a bit but preventing players from just camping out near the goal would be to put in an offside line similar to where the blue lines are in hockey.
THERE IS A LINE LIKE BLUE LINES IN HOCKEY, THE HALF FIELD LINE! There are blown calls in every major sports, even sports that uses instant replay. The offside did not existed at first, and football was a sport with some players camping in the box, who as soon as they got the ball back run straight to the opposite side with the ball in their feet. Very interesting. The introduction of offside helped to make the defenses position themselves higher and actually created the most beautiful gesture in football when it is perfectly executed : the forward pass (if you watched the German goals against Holland, you know what I'm talking about).
What you don't understand also about the clock (which can be seen everywhere in the stadium on big screens, and on your TV) is that in football, you play 45 minutes STRAIGHT. No timeouts, no stoppage of the clock when you kick the ball in the stand. That is also why we cannot use the video: it would slow down the game. If a team tries to screw up the other by waiting too long to take a throw in, they'd be punished 1) with a yellow card 2) with more added time at the end. If you want to calculate extra time after the final whistle it is simple : 30 sec per substitutions, plus the time that has been removed because of injuries.
I do agree there is a problem with players diving. FIFA tries to correct it with post game bans, but it is not working yet. It will improve though, just give it some time.
Please, american people, stop trying to "fix" the most popular sport in the world. We don't want timeouts or clock control or whatever allowing TVs to show more ads. We don't want to get rid of offsides. Enjoy the game or stop paying attention, I swear we won't bother.

Amen to that. The sport is perfect as it is, with the exception of diving; and goal-line technology should also be introduced at some point.

Well adding a referee on each goal line make goal line error less frequent. In one of the first games of the Euro (don't remember which one...) the ball bounced half in the goal, half on the line and the call was good thanks to the additional ref. An error is still possible, but very unlikely now.

I disagree. We can agree to disagree but if one side were to fatigue, it would just show better conditioning on the other. Let them play already. I do like the shoot out in Hockey but cannot imagine game 7 of the Stanley Cup coming to a shootout. Just cannot.

So why not show this time on the board? It would be so easy! Do you not see that this could lead to bias on the part of the referee as only they have the true time. I stand by this statement and think my idea is better, and easy. Really good point on replays though and I do admit the game with the running clock has some suave to it. I do like the idea of replays for goals though and did not even come up with it on my own. Makes good sense.

What happens if either team can't score, and this goes on for a couple of hours? This is actually very likely as it isn't 1 vs 1 it's 11 vs 11, so conditioning balances out. Players can't find the energy to score. As extra time nears the end, both teams actually tend to settle for penalties. If not, I can see many viewers tuning out.

One last thing- Not to be a dick but what I love about Soccer- 1) These guys are great athletes. Even as a total novice I can appreciate their speed and unbelievable skill. 2) Their vision- They have to be able to see the field, just like a good point guard. I like the precision passes . 3) I get it, goals are fun, really fun. Orgasmic even. 4) The fans, the constant cheering and swaying is cool to watch and puts most American fans to shame 5) I really like the upset of Denmark vs The Netherlands. It was a classic sports upset. With one team blowing all kinds of opportunites and then the sudden unexpected goal. Although it cost me money, looking back it was the reason we are watch sports.

If you watch closely, they show how much extra time there will be right before the 90th minute. You cannot show it before, because what if you announce 3 minutes at the 80th and 2 minutes later, there are 2 subs and an injury? It is just not possible to do otherwise ;)
And I also disagree with you about penalty shoot outs : at one point players are so tired that football is just not enjoyable anymore. Football shoot out is very stressful and mental. Looks easy, but when you realize they have to do so after 120+ minutes of play and under the most intense pressure a human being can possibly have, it becomes really, really interesting.
I agree with your 5 points though. Especially 4 and 5. Football is the ONLY sport in the world where amateurs on a great day can beat pros on a bad day. Some hate that, some love that. Well, I choose my camp :D

Just for the record......I am 39 and have been playing soccer since I was 5 and still play soccer 2 times a week. So, I clearly love soccer and have a bit of knowledge on the subject. I don't discount what the OP is getting at one bit. Sports evolve and make changes for the better all the time.
First, the flopping is probably one of my biggest pet peeves because that is one of the main complaints from "soccer haters". It has given the sport a bad name and reputation. The refs need to be told to call more players for this and give out more cards for flopping. Personally, I grew up never wanting my opponent to know he knocked me down or hurt me, so it particulary drives me crazy to see some of these pansies flopping around and faking injuries to get calls.
Second, for overtime periods I say reduce the numbe rof players on the field. Maybe play 10 v 10 or 9 v 9. Teams have to choose which players to remove. This would cause a more wide open field and more scoring chances.
I have also thought about the off side rule and how to tweak it, but I'm not sure there is anything you can do. You can't eliminate it, but this is probably the most missed call by linesman.

My 2 cents. Add more Refs. The NFL uses what? 5 refs and they still miss some calls. Like most sports, the ref's decision can changed the outcome of the game. With only one ref and his call is final, it makes you wonder if he is fair or not.

Looking back, I guess the things that bother me the most is the refs have all the power. Only they know the real time. They determine a lot of the goals, is it off side, is it not. They determine the pace of play and call all the dives. Refs have a lot of power in a lot of sports but in soccer they almost have absolute power. I would like to see the game determined more on the field.
