First of all- I hate the NBA. I hate the flopping and star treatment. I hate the attitude and overall game. Stern has totally fucked this sport up. I especially hate that many if not most people actually like it. Secondly- I never watch soccer, I am only watching as one my in laws are at my house and are European and "Futbol" obsessed and two, Van is making me some serious cash
My opinions- The dives have to stop. They need a hockey type penalty for diving, or to be checked thoroughly as I fear many have vaginas. If someone is "in pain" for more than 5 seconds he should have to come out of the game ala NBA. If he comes out a second time, there is no return. Get rid of off sides. It is stupid. If you need to have a no cherry picking rule, install a large box ala NHL and once you are in the box, there is no off sides. If someone is behind you and you are on defense, you are a stupid fucker. Get rid of ties and shootouts, let the fuckers play til someone scores. The NHL can go for hours same with MLB why not these pussies. Also, it will open up the game if they know they have to keep their coiffed hair out there past dusk. Allow instant replays on all the diving and "injuries" ,I am watching this box from Croatia claim he has a twisted ankle and on the replay nothing happens to him, plain and simple. They have changed the NFL so if there are injuries late, you lose a timeout and they run the clock. It works. Finally, GET A FUCKING CLOCK ON THE FIELD. YOU CAN RUN A CLOCK AND SHOW EXACTLY HOW MUCH TIME IS LEFT LIKE THE ANY OTHER SPORT SO WE KNOW WHEN THE GAME IS REALLY OVER. THIS IS ABYSMAL AND STUPID AND MUST BE LEFT OVER FROM THE RENAISSANCE ERA. The ref simply can tell the time keeper to start the clock, like they do in all other major sports in the world and we all know when the game ends.

I offered a suggestion on how to make off sides better. Why do you think this would not make the game better? Can you imagine at one time football had no forward pass and the NHL was played without goalie masks. Change is not necessarily bad. As it stands now, you are rewarded for letting the other team beat you on defense. This is stupid. I am sorry but it is. The game would be much more enjoyable and get rid of the most difficult call with my suggestion.

Your first two arguments were on point but you've lost all credibility with getting ride of offsides... What do you want, 2 Peter Crouch in each team patiently waiting for long balls in the box?

Someone tell me what off sides brings to the fans excitement or viewing pleasure. I must be missing it. Someone help me with why when the ball is 35 feet from goal the players need to worry about if they are behind the defense....
That is so silly. Look I do not watch a lot of soccer, I admit it. I am just making some suggestions. Sports evolve. Points for the best reason to have off sides, patiently waiting.

cherry picking would completely ruin soccer. if scoring was as easy as leaving one player standing in the opponents box, the game would be a sloppy shit show. you have to earn your points in soccer, if you cant break down a teams defence, you dont deserve a point.
why do you want to eliminate defence from a sport?
0
why dont they play hockey with 4 nets?
why dont they play football on ice?
why doesnt the NBA add a second ball?
why doesnt baseball eliminate 2nd base?

Your posts in this thread resemble the ramblings of a half-drunk nitwit sitting the bar during the Euros... is that where you're posting from?
I get that you are offering suggestions or whatever you think makes for intersesting sports conversation, but as you readily admit... you really know DICK about this sport, or its dynamics.
Draws are a part of the sport. Mainly, it's due to the fact that it is actually goddamn difficult to score a goal in soccer. And scoring a goal, as you might've noticed, is quite an exhilariting feat for a team. When's the last time you saw an entire stadium and country ERUPT into a frenzy of sheer passion and joy over a single score, at any point in a game. I'd bet you'd never see that reaction to a 2nd quarter cherry pick dunk in an NBA game. In hoops, and baseball, scoring is too easy and prevalent for there to be any reason to allow for ties.
In Soccer, a Draw is often viewed as a favorable outcome. And in tournaments, the difference between losing and drawing is HUGE in terms of the overall group, and points accumulated.
Offsides -- Teams use all 10 men to establish pressure and dominance in field position... if you allow players just to stand where they want, it disrupts any semblance of offense and defense. Would you be Okay with the NFL allowing players to stand anywhere on the field on teh opposite side of the line of scrimmage? In soccer that line of scrimmage is between the last defender and the first attacker. The build up is the beauty of the fucking sport you twit!
Sports evolve, yes... but I suspect your capacity to understand anything other than "American" sports, has not.
Enjoy your PBR during the game

Without the offside rule, the defence would have to sit very deep. With it, the defence can push up when their team attacks. Those beautiful through balls would never happen. There's no real point in the midfield without offside. There are many more reasons.
I would go as far to say that the offside is the most important rule as it creates a balance between defence and attack

Well said, especially the point about whenever a goal is scored. Being with fellow fans, whether that be in a stadium or in a pub, when a goal is scored is an amazing site.

I experienced ths phenomenon for the first time ever a few weeks ago, at the USA v Brazil friendly. It was my first ever live soccer match.
Even tho it was clearly a mismatch, and Brazil had dominated an otherwise sloppy and listless USA.. when they scored and made it 2:1 right before halftime, the entire stadium erupted. For that brief moment, it was pure euphoria.
Of course, in the 2nd half, Brazil finished what they'd started, and thumped the USA 4:1. lol
Still though, I've been to FedEx field several times for Redskins games, and never heard it as loud as it was after that goal the the USA. That should tell you something right there, about how amazing it is to get a goal, and why it's worth the wait.

I am not talking about cherry picking, I am talking about a zone, that once you were inside, you would no longer have to worry about off sides.
If you had ever played soccer at least once, you'd know there's nothing more frustrating during a casual game than a forward camping behind the defense, doing nothing but waiting for the ball to come. There is actually a zone where you don't have to worry about offsides : your own half.

Yep, that's how Torres netted the clincher for Chelsea v Barcelona.

I see you guys are vehement on off sides. I will give it to you. Leave it alone. It ain't for me but I am a reasonable man. Yes, I have seen an entire stadium erupt with a goal and felt pure joy, I feel that way in Hockey. Ok let us discuss a writhing rule. I say one player should be limited to 20 seconds of writhing a game and then be disqualified. I say they should put the official time on the clock, so everyone can see it. I am ok with these games ending in ties but what about the championship, are they really going to determine a European champion on a shootout? Really? Is that the rule? Is the world cup the same. Does this seem silly to anyone else? Why not some OT boys, cmon. Talk about the joy of a goal, can you just imagine your country getting the sudden death goal to win the whole she-bang!

I love soccer but have to admit the offside rule needs to be addressed. It slows the game down and prevents free flowing soccer. The linesman blow so many offside calls, it's ridiculous. I realize it's difficult for the linesman when he has to watch where the player is when the ball is played to him.
The solution to opening up the game a bit but preventing players from just camping out near the goal would be to put in an offside line similar to where the blue lines are in hockey.

Soccer is not for the pure of heart....The game is poorly officiated....no changes have been made to get rid of missed/bad calls....and players now...more than ever control the refs...getting play stoppages when ever they get tickled... Only one choice to make....
