Just now starting to think about the World Cup matches and the one thing I have embedded in this small brain of mine is this.....
Team USA is screwed...... After watching that last friendly against the country of Azhxxxxx I now have no doubt that the US defense will allow a ton of goals to good clubs. Aside from that their offense lacks finishers and against the better clubs they will struggle offensively.
If they try to extend a bit on the offensive side of the ball then their slow defense will be exposed.....and if they play 10 or 11 back, their inept offense will do nothing....
All this means us that they are screwed anyway you slice it.....I'm expecting over a in their matches when they play quality teams when the match actually means something.....
Just thoughts Cheers Investinsports

Invest, I certainly don't see the US as contenders, but they have speed and a disciplined style of play. I don't think a game at Candlestick park, with cows grazing and the wind causing havoc, is a place to judge them.
Their group would be a nightmare for any country.

He still has a point tho. They do lack good, consistent finishers and their defense will most likely allow quite a few goals vs faster opponents... The game at candlestick may not have been a good measuring stick but none the less, I think that's what we get this WC... I really hope Im wrong tho haha

Wheaty, Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the US beat out Mexico in qualifying ? They are the same team that many good cappers on covers are touting as a team that will advance. We shall see.

I know my statement was critical and right to the point whether correct or not......ha!!
Yes I agree that the wind blown game at candlestick shouldn't be a barometer of things to come......but I base it on just observation of style of play....watching occasional offensive players get behind the defense.....or the offensive players just not finishing......
Yes the US has gotten better.....I believe they havec"shored" things up to allow themselves to be alive in most games.....so that alone is better....
I just see them as a whole.....getting beat defensively and if they must commit more offensively it will get worse.....
Mexico had a patch of games a while back where they were really all out of sorts .......lots of controversy, etc.....as they start to put things together and I'm not counting the match against Israel....ha.....they should be a bit better than the US.....heck if "chickarito" comes off the bench.....who does the US have with those skills who can even start....
I guess there is no right or wrong.....as all these countries march the best players they have out there.....I'm just saying I sense some over material in thecUS matches......
I been wrong before.....so if all their games go under....than everyone can I say...."hey invest, you were wrong"....

US will be hard pressed to get a point. Who are the prognosticators?

Franz- yes they did beat out Mexico in qualifying. But two things, 1) I don't know how much stock I would put into that. Im not really impressed with the Mexican national team 2) The team that you're referring to and the team I she the other night looked like two completely different teams imo. Sure, that could have had a lot to do with the situation, pitch and weather conditions. But Im still just not that impressed with this team.. We will see when the time comes tho

That's a completely different Mexico team. IIRC, they fired their prior coach and they've looked much better ever since.

You are so right, that first match against Ghana is so important......I was trying to figure in my mind how that match might play out but will wait for lineups.....
I'm sure Ghana knows how important that game means too for them also.
I can picture this....after US Ghana tie and Portugal Germany tie.....they can be all sitting at 1.......ha.......and than it gets interesting...

You have to wonder where the US goals will come from.
I see US under 2.5 points for the group stage at +105. It all comes down to the Ghana game. If you think the US won't beat Ghana there's value in the under for sure. After Ghana they play Portugal in Manaus and then get Germany. Impossible task for this US squad.

I have to agree with you Invest. It is going to take their absolute A game, AND another team playing well below their average. Looking at that first Ghana match I think both teams will understand that it will require 3 points in that one to have a shot at advancing (even if its not 100% true I think in many ways it will feel that way to the players)...perhaps this would tilt me towards an OVER?? we will see
on the flipside the Germans and Portuguese might feel the opposite, makes me more inclined towards the UNDER in a safer played game by both sides...

Not saying you're wrong, but one thing from the last friendly is that the US played a 4-4-2 with Wondo up front next to Altidore. That isn't what they will be playing come cup time. They switched to it seconds before the match because Dempsey injured his groin in warm-ups. If you watch the next friendly they'll be playing a 4-4-1-1 with Dempsey playing off Altidore. Altidore plays a lot better with good service and Dempsey playing off him should make a difference. Wondo will be coming off the bench, he was the one that missed a ton of first half chances, but he isnt a starter. I don't completely disagree with you, but they may show you something more with a different formation come the next friendly.

There is no right or wrong......there just is!! Ha.
I don't put much stock into any one game but I do try and remember what I see from.previous matches and try to visualize what might happen in the future during upcoming matches. That US team is really hard to guage as one minute they look somewhat fluid and in control with some chances.....and the next 2/3 of that same minute they look lost and uncertain....
The US has improved but I'm afraid they will be a step slower than most and the speed they do have is more of an inexperienced (for the lack of a better word) or a lost on the pitch speed.
The whole basis of my post was to blurt out that o believe that in this cup most of the US games go over.......which is like the kiss of death because one would think that such an important Futbol Tournament would breed tuff close low scoring matches....
I'm no expert....heck I don't think there is such a thing as an expert......but its fast approaching......
Cheers to you

Defensively they're a mess. They were watching the CL final and were scared of Ronaldo. They should score plenty of their own offensively. I agree, I could see all 3 going over. They heat with the Portugal match in Manaus may be a factor.
Best of luck!

I played soccer at a high level university in the states, the problem is that most of the coaches at high places or teams look for speed, how tall you are, how far you can jump, how hard you can shoot and so on, they dont care or understand the creative players at all and thats why the National team how no creative players in the midfield.
The US national team has always been a counter strike team, play defense and at one point or another we will get a break away cause we have fast players. ( thats the only tactic they know )
I hope they do well and Im sure it wont be easy to play them.

Agreed played D1 ball in the United States, its a real mess. Defend all game and try to score on a set piece. Really gross stuff

Please refer to my original post #2......I certainly don't consider the US contenders, and their group is a nightmare for any country. I was just saying that the exhibition game at Candlestick shouldn't be a measuring stick. And yes Campo, they are roughly the same team that beat out Mexico, as is Mexico. You can say that the coach has gotten more from his team since losing to the US.....maybe. Personally, I'm not big on either team this tournament.
Zamigo, did you mention the word OVER ? Lol
Im with Invest on that front, I expect plenty of goals against the US. It may well decide who goes through behind Germany in this group. Once again, placing an importance on goal differential in round robin play.

haha I make one comment over a month before the world cup (in which I exaggerated slightly) that meant to suggest that many of the first games will go UNDER, and now I am under arrest for suggesting that one might OVER

I mentioned my belief is that the US is screwed if they try to play the least bit offensively because I don't think their defenseis good. So iI'm thinking over in their games.
With that said. .....i dont even place wagers on the World Cup Matches for game totals as I tend to wait until half time to see how the game plays out.......to see who needs what....especially in the knock out round.
Heck I'm scratching my head over the US vs Ghana matchup........
Keep calm.......study hard......will be cheering at the end of the World Cup Tournament that all of us has made some $$$$.......

The little hope the USA have is playing Germany last...if the USA can get a win v Ghana & Germany start with 2 wins they rest a few players nad it could be an agreed upon Draw etc,
either way I will NOT be writing off the chances for the Yanks to qualify as Ghana sucks & Portugal goes the way C.Ronado feels

Zamigo, It's called humor. it was meant as a good humoured poke. The same as when someone says to me " Franz, you're betting on Bayern ? It's a form of acceptance around here. Sorry you don't see it that way. I will refrain from any further comments to, or about you.
