SportsMavin, I've been keeping up with your every post in this thread like a 13 yr old girl hanging on every move Justin Beiber makes or something. Love what you do, and I have all the confidence in the world that you are a gifted handicapper with a lot of experience who is willing to put in the necessary work to be a long-term winner. I've only been frequenting Covers for two months, but between this site and the other ones that I have been visiting for longer, I will say that the chances of coming across a poster like you, who is willing to not only put the time in when it comes to handicapping, but also when it comes to posting, are slim to none, and so I thank you sir.
With all of that said, I would love to hear your reasoning for betting on the Jazz tonight. You and I have different styles of handicapping to be sure (I use a lot of trends, for example, and quite frankly don't pay a lot of attention to line movement), and I feel pretty strongly that that Clippers are the play tonight. But if there is anything that can cause me to be a little apprehensive, it would be a capper of your pedigree being on the other side.
The way I look at it, the Clippers have won 9 straight home games by an average of 18.8 ppg. The Jazz are not a good road team. The Clippers are hot as can be right now, and evidently they want to win the Pacific Division badly. Chris Paul seems to be one of those guys who just can't stand losing, and the rest of the team seems to be following his lead. I believe both teams will want to win, but the Clippers have shown themselves to be head and shoulders above the competition this year, especially vs. the bottom half of the league at home.
On the other hand, I just don't see too much favoring the Jazz. Would love to hear your thoughts. Good day, sir.
I agree that the Clippers are a superior team here. I also agree that Paul hates losing and in that sense he reminds me of Kobe. But at the same time - one who cashed in for us in a previous game letting the Jazz to cover - was Paul, who missed the second free throw driving a game into 2-4 point highway rather than 3-5 point one. The same things that the Fakers and Kobe have done for years now. I don;t say Utah will win tonight - although everything is possible, but the element of ATS is a corner stone of Vegas and everything that comes with it. 10 points - although can easily be covered by the Clips (as they could have easily covered in Utah as well) -will put their ATS record into astronomical numbers and that is not how the league is operating. I might be wrong at any point I make and particularly tonight - but the point that ATS wins balance out usually is a solid point. And have rarely anything to do with the real strength of the teams. Otherwise - SA, Clips, Miami and OKC would win every single game that is not between them and surely cover too. When team is not playing the defense from the first quarter and allows a weaker team to run ahead by DD leads and than comes back and wins - it is a nice drama - but at the same time, that is the way team can make sure they win - but not cover. That is what the Clips did precisely in the last game and I believe they'ff do the same tonight.

Thanks for the reply, sir. When you say, "the element of ATS is a corner stone of Vegas and everything that comes with it," it's hard to figure out what you mean (maybe you prefer it that way). Seems like maybe you mean that Vegas is known for getting the public to gamble away their money, and getting them to bet ATS is a cornerstone of that strategy? And so as a result fading the public in certain spots is profitable? If that's the case, I don't disagree, but I'm just not quite sure what it is about this line in particular stands out as the time to fade the public.
Regardless, I've stayed away from the spread in this one and am just going to go huge on the ML -550. I hope we both win.

When I said that the ATS is a corner stone of Vegas - aka betting on professional sports - the meaning is very clear. No hidden agendas. I will explain. If there were no Against The Spread betting - it would be very clear who's favorite and who's not and we'd be betting ML only and there apparently would not be any Vegas or betting pretty soon as there would not be any business in being a bookmaker. When you said that you're on Clippers and I am on the Jazz - that meant as I understand that you're on the Clippers ML, and I'm on Utah plus the points. The meaning is we both can win this bet.

Mavin!! You're the man!!! Been reading youre awesome post since day one and i gotta tell you that you're teaching me great things about the sports handicapping i've never seen: like the line movements or the public consensus. I am a rookie bettor, 19 years and only 1 betting. I've made some money but perfectly sure that with your advises i'll make some more. THANK YOUU

I wonder if sacremento is a good 1st half play...no Rondo, and well they usually come to play in the 1st half like they have the past few games at home.

Mavin the Magnificent....LETS GET MONEY TONIGHT....Packers coming back on MINN...i took the utah plus 10 and detroit -2 and a half....but i also took Spurs...I could be wrong but i like the match-up enough with a full, healthy Spurs team. I think Dallas should play Jae Crowder more now that hes back, I loved him in college and he is a solid inside and out player in the NBA. Tony Parker should have a big game tonight

Sacramento is not the kind of team I'd risk my money on playing against the Celtics. On the other hand the Celtics did not start to play yet. To early for them . Once they'll start winning a game or two in a row - we'll start to ride them. So, this game so far is a big question mark.

Mavin I was surprised when this morning we had a lot of the same picks. In NFL i backed vikings and redskins but also had Panthers straight up +250, giants, NE but i lost JETS straight up and Ravens.
NBA i obviously had the 3 games i mentioned above-pistons, spurs and jazz.
I was gonna give you my two cents on why i took the Panthers straight up. Whats nice whenever a good offense plays the Saints, no matter when the Saints are favored or not I know in a spread within 7 points there is a good chance either underdog still has a better chance to cover since they put up a lot of points. While a team like the Rams are in a lot of tough defensive games making even close covers for underdogs harder to win. So in turn i figured if Panthers are ahead there is a better chance they cover since they will put up points against the Saints creating a bigger chance with touchdowns for point differential and also everyone was backing the Saints and the Panthers have been on a roll the last couple games leading up to today. Anyways just showing you my incite on that bet. It would have been nice to see All Day Peterson break the record but we won the bet and in the sports betting world that is all that matters.

Mi local bookie has moved jazz up to 10.5. Is people betting hard on the Clips or any change in the game?
I think it's a bit of a combination of both: public betting the Clips and Marvin Williams out. I'm right now working on a first half line for that game and if I'll feel that our pick is in danger - I might play the Clips -6 first half. But so far no changes for me.

There are no such things in the sports handicapping as jinxing . That's an excuse for people to justify their losses. Remember that any loss is a win for the backers of the other side. And , besides, I'm far from losing record wise or money wise. He either tailed only losing plays (I'm 10-5) or is simply playing many games besides mine.

GL on the Spurs. I'll wait till the HT to see if there's any value in a second half bets.

I'm checking the first half bet on the Clips as to secure our bet just in case I'll come to conclusion that Marvin Williams' absence gonna be a factor. So far it did have move a line half a point. From my experience - the first game played without a starter has opposite reaction and undermanned team plays better. Remains to be seen

True, what matters is that I'm 2-0 on NFL plays today with the Redskins game pending and the winning day guaranteed. Now, more important is the choice of the plays which in both cases proved to side with the team's intentions as well as the house happiness
