The 15th Presidents Cup takes place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club this week, and the Americans are a sizable favorite to hoist the trophy for the 11th straight time.
It’s been a tough run for Team International, and our top Presidents Cup golf picks are calling for the Red, White, and Blue to have another strong week and keep the good times rolling north of the border.
Best Presidents Cup picks
- Team USA to win outright (-250 at bet365)
- Team USA to win fourballs (-175 at bet365)
- Sam Burns Top USA Captain's Pick (+230 at bet365)
- Min Woo Lee Top International Rookie (+100 at DraftKings)
Presidents Cup outright pick
Team USA to win outright
-250 at bet365
The Americans have won 12 of 14 Presidents Cups, including 10 straight, and they’ve got the superior top-to-bottom team again in 2024.
Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa are the three best players in the event, and I particularly value what glue guys Russell Henley and Brian Harman bring in addition to the firepower of Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, and Wyndham Clark. Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa have been next to automatic in team competition, too.
Sure, it’s boring to go Red, White, and Blue, but so is golf when played at its best. I’m also anticipating the Americans to be trading at a steeper price before Thursday’s opening matches, and they'll be motivated to rebound from a tough 2023 Ryder Cup on home soil.
Presidents Cup prop picks
Team USA to win fourballs
-175 at bet365
There’s more predictability in the fourball matches, and Team USA captain Jim Furyk has a well-rounded team to mix and match. As noted, I’m anticipating more of the same from the go-to duo of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, while Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns aren’t going winless again in 2024.
Seven Americans finished inside the Top 25 in adjusted scoring average on the PGA Tour last season compared to just four players from the International team. The USA also has seven players inside the Top 25 in birdie-or-better percentage, and the International team only has three. I also value the Americans having six of the top seven players in the DataGolf Rankings.
Top USA Captain's Pick: Sam Burns
+230 at bet365
I’m anticipating Sam Burns playing four matches and he’s trending in the right direction with a T12-T5-T2-T12 run to finish out the Tour season. His game is also statistically tight with ranks of 10th in true strokes gained tee-to-green, third on approach, and first in true strokes gained putting among Presidents Cup participants.
I also value his likely pairing with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The two are long-time friends, and while their track record in team play is poor through past international competitions, they’ve also gone up against the opposition’s best. His two singles matches have also been against Hideki Matsuyama and Rory McIlroy, after all.
Still, he finished second in birdie-or-better percentage on Tour last season, and that’s all the more encouraging alongside the highlighted approach and putting statistics across his past four events.
Top International Rookie: Min Woo Lee
+100 at DraftKings
To start, Min Woo Lee is trading as a -125 favorite in this market at bet365, so these +100 DraftKings odds have my immediate attention. The difference in prices attaches a positive expected value of 11% to the +100 DraftKings number.
Secondly, Lee is a far more talented player and I’m anticipating him playing more matches than the steady Eddy MacKenzie Hughes. The Aussie’s tee game is elite and he ranked 12th in total driving on Tour last season and ranks second in both driving distance and true strokes gained off-the-tee among President Cup competitors across his past 50 rounds.
Finally, with circles on the card at a premium in match play, I also value him finishing better than Hughes in both birdie average and birdie-or-better percentage on Tour last season.
