Early Kentucky Derby action has knocked Florida Derby winner Fierceness down to 3-2 from his morning line of 5-2. Meanwhile, second choice Sierra Leone has drifted up from 3-1 to 6-1. Other major movers include Just Steel (20-1 to 33-1), T O Password (30-1 to 61-1), Track Phantom (20-1 to 52-1), and Stronghold (20-1 to 42-1). Only Dornoch (20-1 to 15-1), Honor Marie (20-1 to 16-1), Forever Young (10-1 to 8-1), and West Saratoga (50-1 to 31-1) have joined Fierceness in being bet down off their morning lines.
Bettors should take these lines with a grain of salt, as even though $500,000 sounds like a lot of money, over $89 million was wagered in just the win, place, and show pools in last year's Kentucky Derby.
How should bettors re-approach the Kentucky Derby?
Fierceness will still wear saddle cloth No. 17, but he won't break from that winless Kentucky Derby post position following Encino scratching out, which may have satisfied some highly superstitious bettors.
Nevertheless, bettors shouldn't put too much weight into these early odds, as "smart" money from big-time gamblers is likely to come in within one hour or less of the race.
